Music Review: The best love story of this century

A seminal masterpiece! The first significant Hollywood movie to showcase a "real" love story between two men, demonstrating to the world that gays are humans too. Not only a heartbreaking love story that spans human history. It is a story revealing our sadnesses on so many levels-from Ennis' chances at a relationship ruined by his father's conviction that survival may be more important than love; to the hurt of so many women who are the victims of a gay man's need to "pass" in a world that will not accept the open existence of their meaningful love relationship. Hauntingly beautiful scenery weaves brilliantly with Santaolla's cowboy country music, the music of indulgent heartaches, to permanently cast the story in melancholy memory. Youthful actors Heath Ledger, Michele Williams and Jake Guyllenhall play out these roles with a genius recognized only in the most brilliant denizens of the silver screen.Music Review: Fantastic!

The moment I arrived home after seeing "Brokeback Mountain" (on the day of its premeire in my city) I went online to find at least a sample of the soundtrack. I ordered the soundtrack from Amazon right away and received it in a very small amount of time.
I couldn't be more pleased with what the soundtrack had in store for me.
The CD provides a beautiful balance between the hauntingly inspiring sounds of Gustavo Santaolalla's guitar and the wonderfully classic western melodies.
Santaolalla's music arouses emotional transcendance, yet inforces the pain of a hastey departure, both of which are fully explored in the movie.
I urge all who are reading this to order this soundtrack if they're looking for pure musical satisfaction. I suggest, however, to experience the film before listening to the music. It will have much more of an impact, I believe.
Music Review: Music as beautiful as the film - true enough

The Brokeback Mountain CD soundtrack has only a bit of Gustavo's beautiful original film soundtrack (which I've been searching for all over the place and cannot find). This CD has only a few sections of his score, and many recordings by several singers whose songs are beautiful and fit the film exactly. (Some songs are written by Gustavo).
I loved the film so much and I do love this CD. The beautiful ballad "A love that will never grow old"; "He was a friend of mine"; "I don't want to say goodbye", etc., bring me to tears - as the film certainly film. All through the CD, as thru the film, the element of sadness and tragedy of Ennis' and Jack's lives is prominent. A beautiful love story which ends, sadly, in tragedy for both. (I know the original film soundtrack has to be out there somewhere; I'm continuing my search. "The Wings" alone the film's theme)is worth it!)
Music Review: last 2 songs over the closing credits continue Ennis's story

After seeing the movie 4 times and playing the soundtrack quite a few times I realized the last two songs (Willie Nelson's I knew a man" and Rufus Wainwrights "the maker makes") continue the story of what Ennis would be feeling as moved forward through his life. First off, he and Jack always called each other "friend" and their relationship began as friends first, also the song tells about his friend who died 1000 miles from home on a road, never hurt anyone, etc. then the haunting Wainwright song (if you look at it as Ennis thinking) talks about what he has gone through to move on with his life. In the movie he always talks very gently to his animals, you can see him thinking these various thoughts while he is working, later in his life, come along little dogies, etc. Very beautiful if you can see it that way, which is how I believe it's intended.Music Review: Haunting soundtrack but

As someone has noted below, this CD only features about 13 mintues of the whole score along with some of the songs that the composer also wrote. Why this was done is anybody's guess. This CD only gives you a flavor of why Brokeback Mountain won the Oscar for best music. I have heard the additional music and that combined with the original songs is why the movie won the music award.
The guitar music certainly is spare but it did a perfect job to evoke the sadness and heartache of this landmark film. The songs are wonderful, too, particularly the ones sung by Emmylou Harris, Teddy Thoompson, Willie Nelson, and Rufus Wainwright (Santaolalla wrote some but not all the songs).
I love the music to Pride and Prejudice too--my other favorite soundtrack from the Oscar nominees but I'm glad this score won.
