Music Review: ¡Gustavo, Gustavo y más Gustavo!

"Beautiful" is next, and it lives up to its name. Its beginning is perhaps a bit too long, but eventually segues into a nice slow rocker with well-done dissonant chord play. The chorus is, well, beautiful -- one of the best I've heard from Gustavo or Soda Stereo! "Perdonar es Divino" lessens the good taste in one's musical mouth as it's just plain average; "Verbo Carne" -- why is this track on the LP? Got me. Kind of neat, but way out of place. "Raíz" is merely bland; on the other hand, "Y Si el Humo Está en Foco" is a neat little synth rocker; "Paseo Inmoral" is a Depeche Mode-ish "Personal Jesus" tune, but not as good; "Aquí y Ahora" is merely mediocre, although Gustavo's lyrics are as pretty as ever; "Alma" is overdone with its brooding synths and vocoder Cerati vocals; lastly, "Balsa" seems like Gustavo needed something to complete his disc, so he dibbled on the first sythesizer he could find. Oops.

So where does that leave us? An LP that starts off very strong, decreases in scope a tad, and ends weak. I think most people would like to see the reverse, so that one doesn't come away with a feeling of disappointment. Try to avoid just this -- listen especially to the first half of the LP since these tracks get more and more likeable upon repeated listenings.
