Both Bernsteina and Karajan gave live preformances of the Mahelr Ninth from Berlin that won lavish praise. Abbado's live peformance from Vienna is just as great. I regret saying that his new version from 1999--back to Berlin again--shows a big advance over this one from 1987. Abbado had everything in place already, and the listener is totally involved from beginning to end.
The special glory of this 2-CD set, which also contains the Adagio from the Tenth Sym, recorded a bit earlier in 1985, is the orchestra. Reviewers cry "excellent, amazing, awesome" too often, leaving no room for superlatives when they matter. Here the musicians of the Vienna Phil. soar, giving us precision, warmth, virtuosity, and Mahlerian soul, all carried to the height of freedom and expressivity. Enough--I hope you get to experience it for yourself.
DG has deleted this particular issue, but you can get both performances in Abbado's complete cycle. Or you can hunt out this issue at eBay. Abbado's tempos aren't greatly changed in his 1999 reading--he's not extremely fast or slow in any movement. The recorded sound is impeccable, extremely detailed and warm. Multi-miking seems to be at work, given how clearly every single solo can be heard, but I like being in the heart of the orchestra. (The only sonic flaw is over-aggressive miking of the basses and cellos in the finale.) Five stars, without a doubt.
