Music reviews of Uncivilized Love

Music Review: There is nothing better than a guy and his guitar
Rating: 5 Stars

Gus Black is back! He did two records as Gus (just plain Gus), which are well worth seeking out. He did an incredible acoustic version of "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult on the soundtrack to the first Scream film. And now Uncivilized Love, which is a perfect album in nearly every way. I'm not a fan of people putting their kids on their albums in any way, so let me get that out of the way and say "shame on you, Gus" for that little Casio interlude with the baby crying, even though it only lasts a minute or so. Otherwise, this album is full of Gus Black and his plaintive, often haunting, voice. Unlike some of his previous work, Uncivilized Love is not purely acoustic. There are acoustic moments, but Gus also plays electric guitar, bass, piano, mellotron, keyboards, and harmonica--and there is a full band complimenting him throughout. Some of these songs rock and swing like nobody's business, and all except for the above-mentioned interlude are great. This would be worth the price of admission just to hear Gus and his acoustic guitar on an unexpected cover of "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. He somehow manages to be completely true to the original while reimagining the song as a slow, breathy love ballad. Gorgeous and chilling! I recently caught Gus live in Reno with the always amazing CHRIS WHITLEY and another great band, JOHNNY SOCIETY from New York. If you are a fan of Chris Whitley, Ryan Adams, or Jets To Brazil, you will not be disappointed in Uncivilized Love. And it wouldn't hurt you to pick up Whitley's newest, Hotel Vast Horizon, which compliments this album perfectly.

Description of Uncivilized Love

Gus Black writes bittersweet pop songs with genuine emotion. "Uncivilized Love," the follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Word of Mouth Parade," is a collection of exquisitely crafted songs marked by Black's evocative, acoustic-based backdrops and warm, supple vocals.
In the tumultuous years following his ?99 sophomore jewel Word of Mouth Parade, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Gus Black became variously label-less, a cult hero (having Parade's "The Road Between" covered on Lisa Marie Presley's high profile debut), a father, and, on the evidence of this mature, introspective album, an infinitely more complicated human being. His heart-on-the-sleeve emotionalism and '70s-leaning penchant for pop hooks remain as strong as ever, but they're now focused in service of songs as cautious and brooding as his previous chapters were wistfully effusive. Wed to a sophisticated, yet stripped-down production sense (the artist collaborating with Eels/Old 97's producer Wally Gagel), Gus imparts a musical impressionism that matches the lyrical fancies of "Cadillac Tears" and "Violent Rain." Black credits fatherhood for the more expansive tone here, a mood that stretches from the playful ode to his son, "Debut," to the upbeat "Over the Great Wall" and compelling dirges that range from "12345" to an unexpected cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid." The title track captures the album's essence: Inviting musical simplicity, wed to a complex--and conflicted--world view, yet all too familiar in its evocative spell. --Jerry McCulley
