Music reviews of Use Your IllusionMusic Review: Unnessecary compilation, but pretty good for what it is Rating: 4 Stars
USE YOUR ILLUSION(1998). A Guns 'n Roses compilation, which takes songs from Guns 'n Roses' epic USE YOUR ILLUSION albums(UYI1 and UYI2).
By the end of the 90's,Guns 'n Roses, who had been the biggest metal act of the late 80's and one of the most succesful groups of the early 90's,had been left in ruins. Even though Axl Rose had been able to bring back G&R,Rose himself was the only original member of the group who remained in Guns 'n Roses once he had started G&R up again(keyboarist Dizzy Reed rejoined the band, but Reed wasn't an original member of the group,he joined the band around 1990-1991)and after all of these years,us,the Guns 'n Roses fans, keep waiting for the long awaited G&R album CHINESE DEMOCRACY to finally be released, and in 1998,a Guns 'n Roses compilation, which only took songs from Guns 'n Roses' two USE YOUR ILLUSION albums, was released. This compilation was a little bit unessecary, however;it is pretty good for what it is. Personally,I recommend just buying UYI1 and UYI2(I can't believe YOU COULD BE MINE off of UYI2 didn't make it's way on here!!!!!),however,I am here to give new or casual G&R fans who want to buy this before getting UYI1 and UYI2(as well as the fans who don't want the albums seperately)a rundown of every song on here. Let's get started:
LIVE AND LET DIE:Guns 'n Roses' cover version of a classic song that was originally recorded by Wings(Paul McCartney's post Beatles band)and was originally written by Paul and Linda McCartney. An alright cover version;in my opinion,G&R's cover version of this song would have sounded better if Duff McKagen would have sang it instead of having Axl Rose sing it(I thought that Axl did a good job singing this song,I just think that Duff could have done it better)but still, not outstanding, but not bad either. I'll give it a 7/10.
DON'T CRY(Original):A really nice ballad. The lyrics and music on this track are both really nice, and Axl Rose sings this song with a lot of passion, care, and concern in his voice. The tempo at the end of the track is unessecary and keeps this song from being a 10,but other than that, this whole song is great. 9.25/10
YOU AIN'T THE FIRST:A little weird for a Guns 'n Roses song, but OK. Quite interesting. This song is a little bit of a country song that was written by Izzy Stradlin and is performed by Stradlin on accoustic guitar and lead vocals(Axl Rose also sings background vocals on this track, and Rose's background vocals here are good)and while it really isn't bad,it should have been left out in favor of YOU COULD BE MINE or DOUBLE TALKIN' JIVE. 6.5/10
NOVEMBER RAIN:One of the greatest songs ever written. A totally amazing song, and a very sensational song also--the lyrics, music(especially the piano)and singing on this track are all really beautiful, and this whole song has a lot of meaning to it. 10/10
THE GARDEN:AWESOME! When this song first appeared on UYI1,it was different for a Guns 'n Roses tune--but it still is pretty awesome. Ever wondered what it was like to take a walk in Central Park at night? If the answer to that question is yes, then this song may have your answer to your question--the music here is just wicked(but trust me,in that case, that really is a good thing!),and the background vocals from Shannon Hoon and the lead vocals from both Axl Rose and Alice Cooper that are on this track help keep it suspenseful. 10/10
DEAD HORSE:To be honest with you,I don't like this song. To me,it just comes on as dull and lame, and while it is interesting at times, the whole song itself sounds like it is trying too hard to be a really good song. I'll cut it some slack and give it a 3/10,but again, this song really shouldn't have been here and, once again, should have been left out in favor of YOU COULD BE MINE or DOUBLE TALKIN' JIVE(if YCBM and DTJ would have been included on here,I would have given this compilation five stars).
CIVIL WAR:A really brilliant and patriotic song. This track was written around the time of The Gulf War,and it is pretty much an anti war song that remains calm, not out of control, and really brilliant--I can't begin to tell you how good(actually, how great)this song is. 10/10
14 YEARS:The last Izzy Stradlin fronted song that is on this compilation is really good. Kind of grows old after a while, but still pretty good;this song has a really well plotted story to it,and on this track,Izzy Stradlin does a really good job singing it while Axl Rose does a good job at playing the piano here and singing background vocals on this track as well. 8/10
YESTERDAYS:A really nice ballad that is really beautiful and has a 60's/70's feel to it. How come this song never became a hit? 10/10
KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR:A Bob Dylan cover. Pretty good,a little overdone(the original version of this song is only two minutes long;Guns 'n Roses felt that it needed to be five minutes long)and while I feel(once again)that it should have been Duff--and not Axl--who sung this track(although Axl does deliver impressive vocals on here)what you have with this track is a really good cover.7.25/10
ESTRANGED:One of the greatest songs EVER written and recorded. This track is really a two part song;the first half starts out with very angry and concerned lyrics and singing, and then five minutes later,it ends with very forgiving and caring lyrics and singing. The piano on this track sounds really good with the whole song. 10/10
DON'T CRY(Alt. Version):A good way to close an album, and not only is having it on here a smart move, having it on here makes up for the fact that USE YOUR ILLUSION II(the album that this song originally appeared on)ended with MY WORLD(I don't even need to go into that!). This track was sort of unesscessary, but it still is very good, and does a good job picking up on where the original DC left off on UYI1. I'll give this song a....well....a 9/10,and I'll give this whole album an 8/10 and an A minus as a letter grade.
