Music Reviews of Appetite for DestructionMusic Review: Music that should by owned by everyone!. Rating: 5 Stars
Guns 'N' Roses has made one of the best debuts in rock music history and considering the time this was released in 1987 when pop and hair metal was at its most ridicolous with bands like Poison and the awful Twisted Sister, I mean don't get me wrong there were a few 80's bands that I really like for example Def Leppard, Van Halen, Motely Crue, Skid Row but none of those bands albums could compare to the greatness that was Appetite for destruction.
G'N'R managed to surpass all of that and make an aggressive and hard hitting rock album that takes no prisoners, Axl Rose sounds at his best and is one of the greatest rock singers of all time despite his egotistical behavior which I thought was great cause alot of rock musicians are usualy a bunch of pansies.
Everytime I listen to this it never seems to be tiring or old, it sounds so refreshing especially nowadays with the truly horrendous and pathetic music scene. Starting of with the song Welcome to the jungle it is imediattely known that the gunners have stood out among the other glam/hair metal bands, they have an Aerosmith influence which is apparent only its alot heavier but also catchy at the same time. This original lineup of Axl Rose (lead vocalist), Slash (lead rhthym guitar), Duff Mckagen (bass guitar), Izzy Stradlin (lead guitar) and Steven Adler (drums) is the proper lineup and seemed like everything was in right order. Welcome to the jungle is the turning point for 80's rock anthems, the jungle being a metaphor of the streets of Los Angeles near Hollywood where G'N'R started their band and how difficult it was for them to struggle with poverty, drugs, sex etc. the second song Its so easy which is my personal favorite has a bluesy and metallic sound to it, then theres Night train continues with the sleaze lol if you've read the lyrics then you probably know what I'm talking about.
Out ta get me is a tale about paranoia it also deals with anger, hatred and fear, then we get to one of the best songs of all time which is Mr. Brownstone with great riffs courtesy of Slash and Izzy with aditional drumming done by Axl on percussion this song kicks serious a** and makes me sing along with Axl. Paradise city is another great hit single that everyone has heard so I'm not going to explain it and the rest of the songs like the ballad Sweet child of mine with its famous guitar intro and solo done in the middle of the song that showcases Slash's talent was absolutely phenomenal and great another fav along with Rocket queen and Think about you.
This album is flawless and has no bad songs in it other than Anything goes which was slightly average, so there you go a truly remarkable debut album with great lyrics and excellent musicianship what else can I say but if you don't have this then what are you waiting for GET THIS NOW!
Music Review: The only 5 star album in the world Rating: 5 Stars
There are bands way better than GNR, like Jimi Hendrix, the Who, and especially Led Zeppelin (they will always be the best). However, this is the best album ever because an amazing 11/12 songs are good. This album is not overrated, it is just their only good album.
The songs:
Welcome to the Jungle: 8/10
A good song that sets the tone to the rest of the album, but it is very overrated. Maybe this song is why critics say Appetite is overrated.
It's So Easy: 9/10
Here things get better. This song has a nice crunchy sound and a good outro.
Nightrain: 8/10
The opening riff is too catchy for me, but the rest of the song is a good, fast rocker.
Out ta Get Me: 10/10
The formula of the last two songs, straight on hard-rock, is applied here to full effect. The bridge of this song is the highlight be far. "They won't touch me!"
Mr. Brownstone: 10/10
G N' R switches gears here and tries a song about heroin addiction with a "Walk this Way" style riff. It's very experimental sounding but very good. Listen to Axl and Izzy "voice-mixing" in the chorus and you'll know what I mean.
Paradise City: 10/10
Slash starts this song off with a great intro, and it only gets better. The riffs are great, the chorus kicks, this song rocks.
My Michelle: 8/10
This is a very dark song, so again GNR sounds experimental, and it works again.
Think About You: 8/10
This is a very underrated song. This could just as easily be a Van Halen song.
Sweet Child O' Mine: 9.5/10
I somehow don't like the intro riff to this, it sounds like Slash is getting intimate with his guitar. However, this is a very good ballad, kicking their later ballads.
You're Crazy: 9/10
This song sounds like it is supposed to be played slower, and it is on GNR lies. Strangely enough, this version sounds good.
Anything Goes: 5.5/10
This song really sucks. The intro sucks, the lyrics suck, the riffs are OK, skip this song.
Rocket Queen Pt. 1: 9/10
This song is essentialy 2 songs, and the first part is great, especially the chorus.
Rocket Queen Pt. 2: 8/10
The transition to this slower part is good, but it makes the song a little long. They really only needed one verse in addition to the solo in this part.
The musicians:
Axl: An Ok-Good singer, so stop making fun of him. 3.5/5
Slash: Only Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page are better. 5/5
Izzy: When he sings with Axl, the effect is pretty cool, and he's an OK guitarist. 3/5
Duff: A average bass player, but he gets no solos and is mixed far back. 2.5/5
Adler: What a good drummer, not one of the best but very good 4/5
Music Review: The Best GNR Had To Offer Rating: 4 Stars
I am not a die hard GNR fan. From what I've read & seen, I don't even like the members of GNR. But I will readily admit that their debut album Appetite for Destruction is one of the best hard rock albums of the 1980's. I bought it on cassette a few weeks after its original release ('87) and wore out the tape within months. For most of the 1980's, hard rock/pop metal albums were what I call "sinlge albums". You remember, the MTV/radio singles were the first two songs on the album (the usual formula was a rocker opener and a ballad) and the rest of the material was a forgettable waste of time ("filler"). It got so bad that I usually just bought the silly little cassette singles packaged in those cheap cardboard sleeves rather than waste $9.99 on a whole tape. Not so with Appetite. This is a hard rock masterpiece. This album is definitely greater than the sum of its parts ("parts" being the band members). Virtually EVERY song on this record is at least good and many are great. The singles "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City", & "Sweet Child O' Mine" are of course very listenable. "It's So Easy" & "Mr. Brownstone" are a couple of overlooked gems, too. "You're Crazy" & "Rocket Queen" are also some definite non-fillers. With the exception of "Sweet Child", there are no really slow moments on this album. Mike Clink's production is pretty clean and clear, too. Yes, the lyrics are quite shallow, and the music is usually predictable, but they rock (and in the 80's that's what really mattered). Compared to the barren dross churned out by other contemporaries, Appetite is literally a GIANT among pygmies. The album cover is a cross adorned with the skulls of the band members imposed over a simple black background. It is one of the most classic, well-known images of hard rock, regardless of era or age. Unfortunately, GNR went the way of the dodo bird after Appetite, and none of their follow-ups could match their debut. Lies, Lies, Lies was really an effort of EP stature (but then again I don't really like live stuff). The Use Your Illusions I & II were downright terrible, with really hoaky attempts at folk rock (fail) and more serious lyrics (fail). And please, for the love of all that is holy, good, decent and right, DO NOT buy the Spaghetti Incident. Stay away from it. Don't touch it. Don't even look at it. I assume the band members got together before recording it and said "Alright, how can we end our careers?". A copy was given to me by a "friend", and I pawned it two days later. GNR fan or not, one would not be disappointed with Appetite. It should belong in the collection of anyone who likes just a good, solid, hard rock album.
Music Review: Guns N' Roses Rocks So Hard Rating: 5 Stars
This was the first CD I've ever bought that I like almost every
song on. This CD is so awesome. Guns N' Roses are typically one
of my favorite bands of all time. All of these songs on this album are really great. The weakest songs on this album maybe
You're Crazy, and Rocket Queen. But both songs are still really
good. Here's how I feel about every track on this great CD.
1. Welcome to the Jungle: 10/10 This is the best starter album
ever. The opening is really great. Axl makes me laugh in this track. Great song.
2. It's So Easy: 8/10 This song is also good. But the end to me
dosen't get boring at all. It's just a good song.
3. Nightrain: 9/10 One of my favorite songs on this album. Typical heavy metal style with a great opening. The whole song
is great.
4. Out Ta Get Me: 9/10 This is a great rocking song with Axl
talking about getting away from the cop.
5. Mr. Brownstone: 10/10 This is my favorite song on this album.
This is one of the best songs ever! The beginning in this song
is really great. It should have been on Greatest Hits.
6. Paradise City: 10/10 Yet another awesome song! This one delivers the best rock you'll ever hear. The beginning is really
great with Steven at his best.
7. My Michelle: 8/10 Possibly the heaviest song on the album.
8. Think About You: 8/10 Not much to say on this song but great.
9. Sweet Child O' Mine: 1,000,000/10 Possibly the best song on
the entire album, one of GN'R's best songs ever behind November
Rain. Slash rules on solo in this song and Axl rules on vocals.
10. You're Crazy: 6/10 Like I said before, this is the weakest
song on this album but is still a pretty good song. This song
goes fast, maybe too fast. But is a track I'd skip after 2 minutes.
11. Anything Goes: What the, not much to say but good.
12. Rocket Queen: This song opens great and goes great til four
minutes then gets sadder and sadder. This is the weakest song
on the album though still a really good song. I usually skip
it after 4 minutes.
This is the best album ever. I also recommend these other items
in addition to this album.
1. On Every Street (1991) by Dire Straits
2. Sultans of Swing (1998) by Dire Straits
3. Toys in the Attic (1975) by Aerosmith
4. Get Your Wings (1974) by Aerosmith
5. Nevermind (1991) by Nirvana
6. Fool for the City (1975) by Foghat
7. The Ragpicker's Dream (2002) by Mark Knopfler
8. Greatest Hits (2004) by Guns N' Roses
9. Back in Black (1980) by AC/DC
Music Review: Appetite for Destruction Rocks So Hard Rating: 5 Stars
I've listened to this album last night. I've listened to all tracks. I've liked several songs on this great album. And what I
think is that this is GNR's greatest album of all time. You know
that my advice for this album is Dire Straits's 'On Every Street'. The best songs on this album were 'Welcome to the Jungle', 'It's So Easy', 'Nightrain', 'Mr. Brownstone', 'Paradise
City' 'Sweet Child O' Mine' & 'Rocket Queen'. Let's preview all
the tracks now of this great album.
1. Welcome to the Jungle: Great opening song with a great heavy
metal style. Axl makes you laugh in this track when he sings shananananan knees knees or seprentine!! One of the best. 98/100
2. It's So Easy: This track is also good but this is a track I'd
always skip after a while. 85/100
3. Nightrain: One of heavy metal favorites, it's good but another
track I'd skip after a while because it gets boring fast. 92/100
4. Out Ta Get Me: I didn't really like this song. This song was
talking about Axl gettin away from the cop because he's innocent.
One other thing is that the vocals have bad words in it. 69/100
5. Mr. Brownstone: This track is marginally better. I also like
this track a lot on this album. It's funny and is great guitar
works by Slash. One of the albums best. I even putted this one
on my new compilation, "November Rain-The Very Best of Guns N Roses". One of my favorites. 97/100
6. Paradise City: This song is another great awesome song. The
guitar work by Slash is really cool. The vocals by Axl are hard
to understand but the beginning is really great. One of my favorite songs on this album. 100/100
7. My Michelle: This track to me was ugly, Axl is mad in this track. It seems to be more of a back in black type song than an
Appetite song. 23/100
8. Think About You: This was marginally better. Turning into a love song. 83/100
9. Sweet Child O' Mine: What can I say, this is the greatest song
GN'R ever did. The solo is so great and the vocals by Axl are perfect. This is my favorite song on this album, ever. And is one
of my all time favorite songs next to Heavy Fuel, and Coyote.
Great song!! 150/100
10. You're Crazy: This track was not good, this track had bad words and axl screamin. Who cares about this track? 23/100
11. Anything Goes: At first this song has sex. But it was okay.
The others seem better. 70/100
12. Rocket Queen: This song rocks so hard, great closing track
it's the second longest to Paradise City. It's one of the greatest gnr closers of all time. 96/100
Great album. You Need This Album.
Go out and buy it.
