Music reviews of Grinderman 2 (Deluxe Edition)Music Review: Disappointing
2007's Grinderman, a side project of Nick Cave and three Bad Seeds members, found Cave largely revisiting his pre-Seeds punk side. This follow-up mostly continues in that vein, which also spilled into Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, the most recent Seeds release, leading one to wonder if it is a long-term or even permanent shift. We can only hope not. Grinderman's unabashed garage rock was inherently limited but fine for a one-off side project; three albums is certainly too much. The discerning can only wonder if it is Cave and company, not the sex victim of "Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man," who have been sucked dry. Limited as Grinderman was, it overflowed with creativity; the musicians were clearly having great fun, and the deliberate sound worked their muses in a way that almost certainly would not have been possible otherwise. Here, the path of liberation has become almost a dead end, Grinderman turning out pseudo-garage rock not because it is thrillingly different but because they can no longer do anything else. The album largely shares Grinderman's limitations, but they stand out because the novelty has worn off. For instance, a prior highlight was Cave's electric guitar playing; novelty aside, he had an undisciplined, what-the-hell style that charmed in a way similar to Neil Young's. Here, his lack of real skill is apparent; he is loud, but that is about it, lacking real riffs and solos, much less melodies. Nearly the whole album indeed suffers from lack of melody; one might say this is par for the punk course, but that hardly makes the album easier to hear. The songs also sound too similar; most of the album could be one long work that loses interest quickly. Grinderman's determination to sound as unlike the Seeds as possible has at least lessened slightly, to the album's betterment. Those wanting that band's strengths - beautiful piano, majestic vocal harmonies, soaring violin, etc. - will still miss them, but we can at least hear real violin for a short time. The Seeds' thrash side - noisy guitars, pounding drums, screaming vocals - is of course played up but simply becomes boring, if not numbing, without the contrast. This is not to say the album lacks slower cuts, but they are without drama or anything else to intrigue, making them additional dead weight. As on recent work, the main culprit is the bandleader; contrary to popular belief, Cave is a great singer - even in a traditional sense -, but no one would know it from this. He essentially alternates between talking and screaming without melody, emotion, or vitality. His lyrics are again also very subpar; the first album's minimalism has thankfully been expanded but is sadly replaced with something nearly self-parodical. "Kitchenette" would seem to be someone mocking Cave and should make long-time fans feel sad, but the artless bareness of "What I Know" almost makes it preferable. There are at least two bright spots: "Kitchenette" (despite the words) and "Palaces of Montezuma." Notably more ambitious than anything on Grinderman, they are relatively polished and melodic, sounding like actual finished works. Two songs out of nine is of course not good enough to atone, but they at least help somewhat. All told, only those who liked the first album or the Seeds' thrashier side need apply.
