Music Review: A Rich Choral Survey

There are several 'greats' about this recording: the choir itself has been described as 'The Choir of King's College, Cambridge is one of today's most accomplished and renowned representatives of the great British choral tradition. It was created by King Henry VI, who founded King's College, Cambridge in 1441, to provide daily singing in his Chapel, which remains the main task of the choir to this day; the 1998 recording was made under the direction of the conductor at that time, Sir David Willocks; the works of the composers selected for this recording are among the finest of the literature - Vivaldi, Bach, Palestrina, Tallis, Handel, Gibbons and Byrd..

The qualities of the performances are of the highest order. Bach's 'Jesu, Meine Freude' has rarely sounded so exactly right in intonation and in the Baroque sound. And it is a joy to hear the Coronation Anthems of Handel in this setting! The entire recording is one of the most beautiful collections of choral singing available. Highly recommended.
