Music Review: a voice teacher and early music fan

"PRINCEPS MUSICAE" (Prince of Music) Giovonni Pierluigi da Palestrina produced music of purity and clarity, comparative brevity and simplicity, polyphony used with judicious reserve, banishing all secular elements.

The music of Palestrina (1545-1594) is focused on the Sacred; not surprising since from the time he was a choir boy at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, until he died, the church was a permanent backdrop for the drama of his life. In the impressive dedication of his 'First Book of Motets' in 1563, he wrote: "The function of music in the church is the seasoning of devotion by the added delight of sweetness of song and variety of harmony. The sharper blame therefore do those deserve who misemploy so great and splendid a gift of God in light or unworthy things, and thereby excite men, who of themselves are inclined to all evil, to sin and misdoing." Well, I find myself totally in agreement with this declamation, and am saddened somewhat that I am! But as I listen to this music (several times) I firmly believe that this great composer stayed with this ideal up to the time of his demise.

Palestrina is the composer the Tallis Scholrs have recorded most frequently and this two disc set is a compilation that contains recordings from their very first commercially recorded music beginning with the Marcellus Mass in 1980 recorded at the Merton College Chapel, Oxford; that complete disc has been my favorite for years and bears the title: "Allegri Miserere" with works on it by Mundy, Allegri, and Palestrina. It is still available at a very reasonable price. I think it has one of the best groups of Tallis Scholars that I have heard through the years.

Basically these works herein are concentrated on Palestrina's Mass-settings that are so full of positive, outward-going major-key music, which over the length of a Mass-setting, is a great strength. In fact, three of the Mass-settings rely on bright sonorities: Missa Assumpta est Maria, Missa Brevis, Missa Papae Marcelli. The fourth 'Missa sicut illium' is an excellent example of sonorous which Palestrina achieved by doubling the sopranos and tenors and also used more of a chordal approach. In the parody motet "Assumpta est Maria' the three upper voices are grouped against the three lower ones in easily audible antiphony, which is thus transformed to the Mass, most notably in the Gloria and Credo. The sheer enthusiasm of this music has ensured that, along with the Papae Marcellus, Assumpta Maria has remained the most performed of all Palestrina's 107 Masses. Disc two begins with a six-voice (SSATTB) set of Lamentations, originally the third lesson on the Saturday of Holy Week. The four voiced Missa Brevis, although relatively short and straightforward in musical style, illustrates Palestrina's idiom at its most accessible.

One should take note of the historical significance (musically speaking) of the Marcellus Mass; the Council of Trent in 1564 convening for the purpose of purifying the church service, was so impressed by the quality of Palestrina's music, and particularly this mass that they left his music untouched and bestowed special praise on the "Missa Papae Marcelli".

The Tallis Scholars more than do justice to Palestrina, as they do to many other Renaissance composers. The fact that every line in the music is clearly distinguished in their renditions, along with a perfect balance of parts and implemented by well-trained voices experienced in this genre, provides us with a truly inspirational listening treat. "Who could ask for anything more?" (with apologies to Gershwin)
