Music Review: Mostly stunning performances

Two separate early-digital LP recordings, which turned up fleetingly on various labels, form the basis of this mostly stunning CD. Konrad Ruhland's choral direction has often been censured by British critics for its emphasis on his singers' chest voices; but the emphasis is thoroughly justified in such recognizably Teutonic (though Gabrieli-influenced) repertoire as this. It would be insufferable if treated, King's College Choir style, as the product of genteel Anglicanism. Admirable instrumental playing, a recording which stresses the works' antiphonal character, and useful booklet notes form a most exciting - as well as competitively priced - package.
