Music Review: Fantastic, but...

Allow me first to say I abhor the state of television today. Very few and miles between are those programs that shine forth and cause the audience to think about a subject, concept, or idea instead of reclining passively in front of the flicker box with as much brain activity as a long-decomposed mouse on a completely rusted wheel. Firefly was, without any doubt, as close to art on television as any program has become. It never talked down to its audience (no matter how much the network tried to force it to) and relied on the audience's long-term memory to keep up with the tapestry of its many story arcs - which is likely one of the main reasons the network canned it after two handfuls of poorly-scheduled episodes. Like many of you Firefly fans out there, I had to be peeled off the ceiling when news of the release of the official Firefly soundtrack was announced. I'd bought the online-only verson about 3 weeks earlier, but being an audiophile, 128 kps .mp3s just don't hack it with me. I looked forward to freeing up space on my hard drive by deleting the nasty compressed .mp3s in favor of a bright, shiny new disc. If you're nodding your head at this point in recognition, allow me to caveat you by saying DON'T DELETE YOUR .MP3S!!!! For starters, yes, the CD-quality sound is first rate and the musical Akira-Kurosawa-meets-John-Ford head-on collision enters you into a state of serenity (heh.... get it?), but when you compare the files to the CD you notice changes. Some are cosmetic such as certain tracks have been renamed (ex: "Deserted Ship/Empty Derelict" became "Out of Gas/Empty Derelict"), some will cause more die-hard fans to fill incalculable space on blogs when they discover some interior tracks have been rearranged, all of which were fine and understandable as long as the original material was kept but the one key element that offends my completist/OCD/type-a sensibilities and keeps it off the fifth star is that the track called "Goodbye Early" with its fantastic and sinister oboe overtones has been excised from the CD. All of which is not to say this isn't a disc that you rush out and buy (if you can find it), which you should because the tracks are like nothing you've heard coming from that intellectual wasteland known as television, but I'll still be waiting for the Super Deluxe Multi Disc Gourmet Composer's Edition of the Firefly Soundtrack.
