Music Review: An Almost Perfect Album

This is my one and only Greg Brown album and it's nothing short of outstanding as a recording. It has that Bluesy, back porch Country, comfortable as your favorite flannel shirt feel all the way through. I find it refreshing and entertaining every time through and I can't say that about every album I own (1,800 and counting).
There isn't a bad song in the bunch... except for that dissonant staccato BONUS jobbie at the very end. He could have left that one on the cutting room floor in my view. Not worthy of the rest of the song company on the disc. Maybe it was intended as a joke - tough to say how it got there exactly given what comes ahead of it.
For you fans of Blues guitar, you'll find some pleasant easy listening here. I was fortunate to catch Mr. Brown in concert at the Emerson Theater in Bozeman, MT in the fall of 2008 and he was just startlingly good LIVE. Just him and an acoustic guitar and his songs... marvelous. He sings from experience and that's pretty evident given the lyrics and how he portrays those feelings sonically. You can hear the past miles in his voice. No recording will ever truly capture that quality about him. We were seated in Row 4 - dead center and that voice can get in your kitchen and rearrange the furniture, believe me.
However, that one-on-one intimacy and gentle feel of that night carry over to this recording and, after having sampled pretty much everything he's recorded, I can't say that about all of Mr. Brown's work. This album though... it sounds like he's singing just for you. There's a flow here like a meandering stream through a pretty mountain valley. Just pull up a chair to the edge for awhile and let it take your cares with it downstream somewhere. Like that.
As for instrumentation and musicianship, he's got a sort of stripped down, simple approach going here. There's nothing in the mix that shouldn't be there - it all sounds natural and organic, not forced at all. And that helps the music go down, as they say. Sample BLUE CAR and you'll see exactly what I mean. Brown plays acoustic lead and then the drums, electric bass, electric guitar and some keyboard provide a nice sonic backdrop to his picking. The songs would sound good in a Traditional Country format or maybe Americana or even Folk - definitely Blues. They're all in there someplace.
I'm a guitar nut and maybe that's why I like this one as much as I do. His voice as a perfect match to his acoustic he's playing, and so the harmonious tones that result are pretty accessible to just about any listener. Mr. Brown is a pretty fair picker in my view.
If you get a copy for yourself, try this: when someone is coming over, just before you answer the door, put this one on... at a nice low level in the background and then see if they don't stop you mid-conversation and ask "Who is THIS?"
For my money, this one's definitely a "keeper."
