Music reviews of International Superhits!

Music Review: Greatest Songs of All Time!
Rating: 5 Stars

I own all of Green Day's albums, and I have to say, not one of them has ever disappointed me. First of all, the three guys are incredibly talented- from Billie Joe's raw yet melodic voice, to Mike Dirnt's flawless basswork, to Tre Cool's amazing drumming skills. A lot of people (especially those who own only American Idiot, or have only heard "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" or "Holiday" on the radio) don't realize that Green Day has been around for a while, ever since they formed Sweet Children back in the 80's. They've been making great music since Day One-from "Why Do You Want Him?" (Billie Joe's first song, which he wrote when he was 12 and can be found on 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours) to the 10-minute montages in American Idiot. Green Day doesn't really fit into a certain genre of music- of course, they belong in the Rock category, but they're a mixture of punk, alternative, rock 'n roll, and a little pop-rock here and there, especially on the Warning album. Little did I know that in 1994, when I was a 2-year old too busy throwing string beans around the kitchen to care about music, that one of the greatest bands of all time had finally hit it big.

It's a shame that Green Day has hit the mainstream and is now being treated as if it were just another one-hit wonder music group. All these people are calling Green Day "posers" now and acting like Good Charlotte and all of those other trendy bands are so much better, when in truth, they wouldn't even be around if it weren't for Green Day. Green Day really re-introduced punk and influenced a new generation of music. I think that Green Day should be appreciated for their music and talent, not just because Billie Joe Armstrong is hot (which he is, I won't deny it) or because MTV told you to. Nobody really seems to appreciate them during their between-album phases; when a new album comes out, they're all popular and everyone likes them, but when the guys take a break or go back to the recording studio, their CD's are collecting dust, and people have moved on to Simple Plan, or Hilary Duff, or whoever's "in" at the moment. Green Day also gets a lot of flak from parents about their lyrics; in 1996, one parent wrote a letter to the band (which inspired the song "Reject" on Nimrod) complaining about how they should 'Clean up their act' and 'stop producing such rubbish'. Well, if you don't like it, don't buy it! If you think about it, they're just words, it's not like kids haven't heard them in school or on TV. Green Day's music is a lot more appropriate than some of the rap songs that they play on the radio all the time...those are all about sex, sex, and...hmm, let's see...sex! Green Day is a group of really funny guys with a good sense of humor, and they produce great music. I firmly believe that they belong at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, along with the Ramones, The Beatles, The Clash, and other great bands.

Well, that's my two-cents worth. Here's a quick run-down of the songs on the album:

1. Maria: A previously unreleased track. Very upbeat and catchy, yet still Green Day-ish. 8/10

2. Poprocks And Coke: I'm not a big fan of this song. It's a little to poppy for my taste, and the lyrics are a bit elementary. 6/10

3. Longview: Off of the album Dookie, this is probably one of the best Green Day songs ever!!! Unbelievable basswork, great chorus, everything you could ask for in a Green Day song. 10/10

4. Welcome to Paradise: There are two versions of this song, one off of Kerplunk! and one off of Dookie. Personally, I like the Dookie version better, which is the one on the album. Great song, overall...I like the backup vocals. Good instrumentals, too. 9/10

5. Basket Case: "Do you have the time to listen to me whine? About nothing and everything all at once..." if you want to introduce someone to Green Day, show them this song first. Billie Joe's voice sounds great, with exceptional drum work by Tre Cool. Truly deserving of a "Greatest Hits" title. 10+/10

6. When I Come Around: Probably one of Green Day's best-known older songs, next to Good Riddance. It's a bit overrated, but easy to listen to. I like the instrumentals, especially the guitar and the bass in the beginning. 8/10

7. She: One of Green Day's...deeper songs. Billie Joe's voice is soft in the beginning, but goes into a rage in the chorus. Overall good song. 8/10

8. J.A.R.: The only song on the album written my Mike Dirnt. I didn't like it at first...the lyrics aren't as poignant or original as Billie Joe's, but it's grown on me. 7.5/10

9. Geek Stink Breath: Very raw and powerful, a song about drug addiction and what it can do to you. I don't like the music video for it, though...it's kind of painful. (They pull a guy's tooth out.) 9/10

10. Brain Stew: This song proves that Green Day can play a wide variety of music. Billie Joe changed his voice a bit for this song, but it still sounds great, especially the guitar riffs and the transition to "Jaded". 9.5/10

11. Jaded: Short but sweet. Jaded is probably the most "punk" song on the album; the melody doesn't change much, but I see as is more as a verse than a whole song. It's usually paired with Brain Stew, including in the video. 7/10

12. Walking Contradiction: Everything you could ask for in a song: poignant, original, funny, and most of all, good music. Probably the best song off of Insomniac. 10+/10

13. Stuck With Me: I have to admit, I didn't like this song very much at first, but it's grown on me, sort of like J.A.R. I'm not sure what it's about, though...but I like the music. The music video looks like Monty Python's Terry Gilliam animated it. 8/10

14. Hitchin' A Ride: My favorite song off of Nimrod, Hitchin' A Ride starts off with a sort of chugging beat and then goes into a catchy, irresistable chorus. You just can't listen to this song once without hitting the "repeat" button on your CD player. 10/10

15. Good Riddance (Time of Your Life): Probably the most well-known Green Day song ever. I'd heard this song millions of times before I even knew who the artists behind it were. Very sentimental; one of those songs you never get tired of. 9/10

16. Redundant: One of the few "love songs" by Green Day, it's somewhat slow yet still has an edge to it. It's sort of repetative, hence the name "Redundant". 8.5/10

17. Nice Guys Finish Last: Another one of those songs that you never get tired of, Nice Guys Finish Last is everything Green Day: funny, catchy, with slightly explicit lyrics. Great song, in a nutshell. 9/10

18. Minority: My favorite song off of Warning. Minority talks about not following the trend and marching to the beat of a different drum, probably something Green Day can relate to. The guitar in the beginning sounds cool, and it's got a great vocal part. 9/10

19. Warning: A lot of people don't like this song because they think it sound to "poppy" but I like it. It's about how rules are made to be broken, and satires sayings such as "don't talk to strangers" and "keep out of reach of children." 8/10

20. Waiting: I'm not a big fan of this song. It's probably one of Green Day's most pop-ish songs ever, and, like Poprocks and Coke, the lyrics are a bit elementary. The vocals are good, however, and I like the guitar solo near the end. 7/10

21. Macy's Day Parade: This song is very deep and eerie, a good way to end the album. It really shows off Billie Joe's amazing voice; I wish there were more instruments in it, though. 8/10

Well, there you have it. Congratulations, you've made it all the way through my long, slightly boring review! I hope this inspired you to buy this album; even if you've never heard of Green Day before, if you're a rock fan, it's a really good investment. Don't listen to all of those Green Day-bashing reviews that accuse them of being "posers" and "pop bands"; their music wasn't meant to be taken seriously, and besides, what do all of those people who gave the album 1 star know about music anyway? It should be a law that everyone own this album.
