Music reviews of 21st Century Breakdown

Music Review: Greatest Album Ever (Not to Oversell it or Anything...)
Rating: 5 Stars

Before I picked up 21st Century Breakdown, I hadn't really listened to too much Green Day, but this album actually led me to go get American Idiot. As soon as I put the disc in, I was pretty entranced. For about a week it was all I listened to, and I still find myself going back to it (despite all the other artists in my rather large collection). The album has a certain flow to it, and the tracks work very well together. I find it difficult to listen to them out of context.

Track by Track:

1. Song of the Century: This one really stuck out to me, just because it has a very classic-protest-song feel to it (despite the lack of instruments). A very good summary of the message contained in the album.

2. 21st Century Breakdown: A good choice as the real opening of the album, with powerful instrumentals and memorable lines that keep you interested.

3. Know Your Enemy: A decent track, though somewhat repetitive. As a drummer, I can appreciate the way the drum patterns drive the song, but on the whole, the song can become a bit tedious.

4. Viva la Gloria!: I'm a bit biased, this is one of my favorite tracks on the album. Amazing lyrics, and a beautiful piano solo at the beginning, with Billie Joe's vocals leading into the 4-beat transition to the guitars. Those who know "Letter Bomb" from American Idiot will notice the almost identical guitar riffs.

5. Before the Lobotomy: Another soft intro, this time on guitar. An interesting track, with the soft opening verse repeated at the end, strafing a powerful midsection.

6. Christian's Inferno: Again, slightly repetitive, but overall not a bad song. It really conveys a sort of rage at the entire political system. Almost reminds me of Paramore in some respects.

7. Last Night on Earth: A startling change from Christian's Inferno. The band themselves said in an MSN interview that it was one of the most "tender" tracks on the album. It is interesting to hear a soft love song in the middle of a punk album describing the destruction after the Bush Administration.

8. East Jesus Nowhere: Not a song for the pious! More or less an outcry against organized religion and all the contraditions it contains. Has a sort of militant feel.

9. Peacemaker: This track has a very unique sound. It almost sounds like some foreign style of music - it has a kind of Latin feel, or something like that. Opens with an interesting clashing of violins or some other orchestral instruments, which has a very Beatles-esque sound, I think there's something similar in A Day in the Life from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band.

10. Last of the American Girls: Another track with really good lyrics. It's probably about the "Gloria" character, but could work for any strong woman you can think of - you know, someone who goes against authority and breaks all the stereotypes.

11. Murder City: Works best when following Last of the American Girls (the outro leads into the intro), it's another track driven by powerful... well, everything it pretty powerful, especially in the chorus.

12. Viva la Gloria? (Little Girl): Not one of my favorite tracks, but the piano intro has an interesting sound. The chorus is catchy, but overall I don't feel that it is one of the most memorable tracks.

13. Restless Heart Syndrome: Continues the lull that Little Girl starts, but I find it a little easier to listen to (not that any of the songs are difficult to listen to). Another slow piano track that breaks into strong guitar riffs.

14. Horseshoes and Handgrendades: Not a song for anyone who is offended by the "f" word. This is also probably the main reason Wal-Mart won't stock the album, but if you have no problem with curses, it's a great track. One of the most upbeat tracks on the disc, it really brings the album back after the short lack of really powerful songs.

15. The Static Age: Another upbeat track. It's sort of hard to describe, but it an easy song for anyone to listen too - not too hard, but not soft either.

16. 21 Guns: Sounds like one of the most heartfelt tracks on the album. It's a lot slower than most of them, and it would be really easy to fit in a military style snare drum pattern. Also tones down the album a little, which leads into the next track well.

17. American Eulogy:
Intro: A repeat of the tune from Song of the Century, but with different lyrics.
Mass Hysteria: Slightly repetitive, but for some reason the last three lines ("America is fallin'/Vigilantes warnin' ya/ callin' Christian and Gloria!") really stand out to me.
Modern Age: Again, somewhat repetitive, but not unbearably so. I think Mike sings on this part, but I'm not positive. The ending ties the two halves together well.

18. See the Light: As far as final tracks go, it's a bit anti-climactic, but the subtle way in which they bring back the piano-sounding riffs from the beginning of 21st Century Breakdown is a nice touch. Though somewhat slower than the tracks before it, the song really does tie the album together nicely.

Ok, now that you've spent all this time reading about the album, go buy it! I can personally guarantee that you won't regret it. Hope this was a helpful review (despite the length).
