Music reviews of If You Knew My MindMusic Review: Tender conquerer of the soul Rating: 5 Stars
Saw Grayson live (solo) in Amsterdam on 12.12.2005 in the (in)famous PARADISO music temple.
I was invited for a birthday party: listen to some music and have a drink. Grayson "who", I wondered? Totally unknown to me. (sorry). I didn't have a clue what kind of music to expect.
And wow, I was in for more than a pleasant surprise. His performance is like a whirlwind of energy. He's a real shocker! RAW & PURE. A real rocker, a whisperer, a comedian, a critic, a romantic, a poet, and more... He sweeps you off your feet and takes you right into orbit. You feel alive and kicking and capable of anything. I'm sure I can now easily walk on water AND fly the skies fearless... (I'll keep you posted).
Grayson is a real diver into the soul. I'm still dizzy and in awe after a few days ;-)
In the meantime I listened to this album and I've been playing nothing else for the past 5 days. It's like a mantra, and great to meditate on. Still NOT bored one tiny bit.
Definitely in the same league as John Hiatt, Taj Mahal, Nick Lowe, Mickey Jupp & Willy deVille. Grayson's music sets your soul on fire.
Another Amazon reviewer {lizard lick "ne" (NC USA)} wrote:
"If you don't like this you've got a hole in your soul!": YUP!
Some artists are just too good to be true.
He jumped off stage after the show and talked to us. Nice guy, just as human and mortal as each and everyone of us, and... incredibly friendly!
Grayson does a superb VENI-VIDI-VICI-act.
If you don't want to be touched in heart and soul, be warned, and don't buy this album and certainly avoid a live-performance.
I'm curious about the live-act with his band in the spring of 2006.
C ya, Sherill

Description of If You Knew My MindBorn of the Southern literary tradition, New Orleans' Grayson Capps spins profound and poetic tales, marrying them to steamy front-porch blues and deep rooted Americana. He calls to mind comparisons to Townes Van Zandt, JJ Cale and Steve Earle, but clearly has the making of a singular, iconoclastic talent in his own right. He was first introduced nationally on the hit soundtrack to the Scarlett Johansson/John Travolta film, A Love Song For Bobby Long, in which four of Capps? songs were featured. Grayson Capps? debut album, If You Knew My Mind, was produced by Trina Shoemaker whose resume includes Sheryl Crow, Queens of the Stone Age and Whiskeytown, among others. Throughout the record, Capps husky, whiskey-soaked vocals bring to life the down, but never out, characters who reside in his songs. Greasy slide riffs and finger picked steel guitar create the foundation for stomp-on-the-floorboard grooves, sanctified funk, earth grown soul and gospel refrains. This is music of the South, written on the outskirts of New Orleans and in the backwoods of Alabama, and as real as a deep breath of fresh bayou air.
