Music Review: Bloody Radio

I was a little suprised to see this @ the number 2 spot in best hip hop albums of 2007 here on Amazon. Not because I don't agree, but because this album seems relatively slept on (for example this is only the 5th review and it's been out for how many months?). I'm not going to go into too much detail, but this album is solid from start to finish, and it's a lot stronger than their previous record Deadlivers. Aesop Rock makes an appearance for the hook on The Office which also features a pretty strong verse from labelmate Slug, & that joint was the song that grabbed my attention when I initially listened to Bloody Radio from start to finish. I've had this since the day it came out and I still listen to most of it at least every other day or so, there's only 2 songs that never grew on me, Scarecrow, and the joint featuring Cage. The strongest tracks in my opinion are Is It ME? featuring production from Sapient from the Sandpeople crew (check for this kid, his beats are no joke) & the final cut Heaven is Still Coming. The rest of the album is fire too, but those are the joints I've personally kept on repeat. My favorite album of 2007, next to None Shall Pass, and I'll Sleep When You're Dead. If you liked those you'll probably be feeling this one as well.
Description of Bloody Radio
Born out of the Pacific Northwest's Oldominion hip-hop collective, Onry Ozzborn and JFK emerged as Reason and Fiddleback Recluse in 2004, forming the righteously eerie alliance known as Grayskul. Always reinventing themselves, the two return as Count Draven (Onry) and Count Magnus (JFK) to deliver this release; reverse brainwash music for today's hip-hop listeners, typically force-fed imaginary genres. Grayskul smashes these genres seamlessly into one while interweaving all with message, substance, concepts, wittiness, opinion, and most of all, honesty while still maintaining a sense of humor, imagination, and originality.Onry Ozzborn and JFK reign supreme as the ultimate practitioners of the hip-hop horror reel. But rather than dealing in the pedestrian violence of the city street, these Seattle rappers prefer the lyrically macabre lexicon of the grind house, spitting a fountain of feral imagery more familiar to slasher films than gangsta screeds. A veritable menagerie of revenants populates the songs of Bloody Radio, but balancing this revolving stable of spooks and ghouls, a real-life roster of indie hip-hop notables--Aesop Rock, Slug, Cage, Pigeon John--takes turns on the mic. On "Give Me Love," Ozzborn adds to this uncouth crowd with the whimsical genealogy of at least seven of his alter-egos, delivered in a set of hilariously head-spinning verses. Elsewhere, "Scarecrow" hammers piles of handclaps and a driven six-beat (a hip-hop rarity, to say the least) into a backing track worthy of a Halloween party hosted by Outkast. Despite the fantastic brutality implied by legions of demons, devils, villains, voodoo, serpents, scoundrels, and serial killers, Grayskul's savage poetics offer a surprisingly fresh take on hip-hop violence.
