Music reviews of Live / Dead

Music Review: This music is part of my DNA
Rating: 5 Stars

This is something I wrote a few years ago. I'll share it here.

For me, the pleasure of listening to this Dark Star is experiencing it anew each and every time. It's like walking out into a beautiful day, the sky is blue, perhaps little fluffy clouds hang overhead, the sun is just at the perfect intensity, it's not too cold, perhaps just warm enough to wear a sweater, but not be chilled... It's like, well, maybe you have done
this hundreds of times in your life, but EACH TIME is special.

It's a celebration of LIFE. It's experiencing the frenzy of the music that was created so many years ago, and yet captured PERFECTLY, and continues to be vital and meaningful, even after a thousand listens to. It's THE DARK STAR, not only because it's the one that has blown the lids off of so many minds in the past, present, and future, but also because it's played at a level of musicianship, intuition, and for the duration, persists in finding new avenues to take your consciousness, each and every time you listen to it.

The GD, well, they performed it. But, that is really incorrect. The Dark Star PERFORMED THEM! By this time, it was still a relatively new song in their set of tricks, but it also was something that had been played for a large number of shows and had evolved into a lengthy and very open vehicle for improvising and exploring where the music would go. It was about MUSIC wanting to explode out, music for what music is supposed to be, affect the senses, the NERVOUS SYSTEM. Music, after all, in it's pure, PRIMAL form, isn't about bars and notes and keys, though those structures exist here and provide a framework to go further. This music is about taking the idea of sound and what it can do to your mind to the utmost. Letting it enter our ears, enter your mind, enter your body. Affect every nerve in your body, from the tips of your toes to the very tips of your head. It's about exciting the Chakras, the spiritual centers of your spiritual self. It's about letting go of your tenious grasp on "reality", and floating into the cosmos.

I have listened to this piece of music 100s of times and have it's sounds course through my being, right down to the core. For a serious listening, you need to let go of everything, stand or sit, meditate to the music, LET GO OF YOUR MIND, and let it just pour all around you. You need to find 20+ minutes of time where nothing can bother you, where you are in a happy frame of mind, where you can feel safe, where your environment is conducive to you having an ecstatic experience, and you need to forget TRYING TO LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, and let it wash over you, EXPERIENCE IT. It's not about a theme going through the music. IT's not about if they get every note on time and miss queues. That's not what they were thinking about when they played this, I can gaurentee you that. This band knew how to let go, they've
said so in many interviews. Music was a meditation for them, and that's the way it needs to be experienced.

There are passages that happen here that are more intense, get down to the center of what MUSIC is supposed to do... There are moments where you feel the keys to the Universe are being opened for you to go through. There are moments where you feel all the layers of BS are being torn asunder.

To really experience this music is to LIVE. The Grateful Dead were about celebrating the freedom of life, and they CELEBRATED THE BEST on this evening with this performance. SOmething happened, perhaps it was LSD, perhaps it was just BEING THERE, LETTING GO, a combination of it all, whatever, it is unimportant. The fact is that we are lucky to have this music that a few thousand lucky people got to explore in the annals of space and time. The human race has a long way to go towards being an enlightened civilization, and the Grateful Dead, and this music, are but stepping stones, catalysts, towards pushing us along. It's there for your pleasure, take it if you need it, BUT LEAVE IT IF YOU DARE...

Of course, there are many other great performances by the band which venture to produce the same results, and affect the quantum nature of our souls in a similar fashion... THANK THE UNIVERSE for that, and THANK THE UNIVERSE for the existance of this piece of music, and all the other pieces of music we can experience in this modern age, in our homes so far away in space and time from 2/27/1969, and yet, RIGHT THERE with those freaks, on the stage and off the stage, it's here, in it's glory, and waiting to be grasped.

Oh, and the rest of this CD? It's incredible. The St. Stephen, being from the same show, carries the energy forward and ROCKS. The Eleven is a great example of the jamming vehicle that song was for the band, again, by this time refined to where the earlier rawness isn't present, but the power of the jam is. And, of course, the Lovelight is Pigpen doing what Pigpen does best. The CD closes out on a reading of Death Don't Have No Mercy only the way the GD could do it, and then in a psychedelic fury, the feedback and a curtailed Bid You Goodnight close it out... The extra on this with the studio Dark Star is definitely cool, especially Hunter's readings...

Peace!
