Music reviews of Sumday

Music Review: Do Not Give Up On This Cd, After many listens it BLOSSOMS!!!
Rating: 5 Stars

I am very similar to alot of the fans of Grandaddy who fell in love with them after Sophtware slump. I bought it at a used Cd store for 5 bucks. When I saw the cover I remembered reading all the rave reviews, not really knowing what I was getting into, and bought the disc. I thought 5 bucks, might as well try it.

Well, try it I did, and I instantly fell in love with it. What a beautiful concept album. After I got a taste I had to have more so I got their first album and the down comforter collection and the windfall varietall, Complex Party Come - Along Theories, and many other rarities, until i had just about every song they released, even their really old non-synth Acoustic garage skateboard stuff, Street Bunny, Could This Be Love, and Kim You Bore Me To Death, etc... I just loved it all.

Then after the long wait they finally released SUMDAY. I was so excited when I finally had the copy in my hands. I bought it the day it came out, before any reviews, and I have to admit I was not ready for what I was about to hear. I instantly popped it in to my deck and was ready to be blown away.

What can i say, at first listen I was so hyped on their other music that I felt like i had been abused, spit on and slapped in the face by my best friend. I was devastated to think that the words, I HATE GRANDADDY were flowing through my head. This disc is such a dramatic change of pace and style from all of their prior music, at first I just could not handle it.

For 2 months I let the cd sit and fester on my cd rack after the first listen. I was furious. I totally disliked it and felt like many others, i felt like throwing out all my memoribillia and fanclub stuff, then I found out they were finally coming to Utah. Of course I wasn't going to miss the show, because I have never seen this phenomenal live show I have heard so much about.

Well, i bought the tickets first day they came out and was proud and a little sad to see i was ticket #1. Anyway, I got to thinking, and thought, I am going to get back into my grandaddy collection and begin listening again to freshen up for the show. Well, i had many listens to everything except Sumday. Well, finally, the show was in a month, and I thought, they are going to play alot of stuff from Sumday, so i might as well be informed.

So I took it off the shelf, blew the dust off, and stuck it into my car stereo. I began to listen to it, but this time, I just forgot that it was Grandaddy, and stopped comparing it to SS or Western Freeway, or any of their older quirky songs, and just took it for what it was. Well, it began to grow on me. From the "Click Click" beginning of "now it's on" i began to feel this new sound, and I really really liked it. Infact, being in this different mindset, this disc sounded like a completely different disc the 2nd through 300th time listening to it.

Ever since, this album has slowly grown and flourished on me. It has completely taken over most of my music listening time since September. I have to say this cd is my favorite Grandaddy disc now. i agree with the band now, who admits that this is their most different but favorite disc as well.

Please all of you fans don't give up faith on G-daddy yet. This disc must unvail itself to you, don't rush it just let it gently thrive and grow until you realize it's beauty.

This is a wonderful disc from a wonderful band. Their show, by the way, was AWESOME. Best live show I have ever seen from any band ever. The sad thing is that they sounded even better live, so now I hope and pray for a live disc.

Grandaddy, keep on keeping on!!!

Description of Sumday

Sumday doesn't so much represent a stylistic change for Grandaddy as it does a change in attitude. The Sophtware Slump, its predecessor, superbly combined low-budget experimentalism and country-tinged American pop to evoke everyone from the Flaming Lips to Neil Young to ELO. Sumday finds the California band conducting business as usual, though exhibiting a noticeably brighter mood. "I got not reason to be weathered and withery / Like in the season of the old me," Jason Lytle sings on opener, "Now It's On," demonstrating a newfound optimism that rears its sunny head throughout the album. "The Group Who Couldn't Say" could have been a bitter tirade against the music industry, but it's not, saved by Lytle's fragile voice, which is sweet without being naïve. "Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake," meanwhile, is carried along by a bouncy keyboard riff that's reminiscent of Under the Western Freeway's "A.M. 180," but with more playful lyrics. Even slower, more melancholy songs such as "Yeah Is What We Had," "The Warming Sun," and "Saddest Vacant Lot in All the World" retain the quality that Grandaddy's trademark sound: simple music played on a grand scale. --Robert Burrow
