Music Review: His best album in a 30-year span

One must travel 22 years forward in time (to 2004's "Harmony") or 9 years back (to 1973's "Sundown") to find a Lightfoot album in the same league as this one. This is his last album on which it can be said he was in full voice, before it weakened suddenly (although over time he rose to use his aged voice satisfyingly). It is a mature voice, but recognizably the same Gordon who sang "Early Morning Rain", and the instrumental arrangements sparkle - they richly enhance the tune without ever intruding on the main act which is Gordon. I read somewhere that these songs were written while his marriage was breaking up, and you can hear him coming at that issue from several different angles. In emotional chronology (not track sequence) here are the best ones: "She's Not the Same" reflects confusion in the face of a changing lover. "Shadows", about an attempted reconciliation and unearthing of old love, perhaps in a vain attempt to continue it. "Baby Step Back" uses a Sundown-type rhythm and harmonies in a warning to an estranged ex in which he seems to speculate on the terms of a divorce settlement ("Maybe I'll get much more than I need or much less than I should own.") "Thank You For the Promises" is an especially moving song reflecting painful resignation in the face of broken promises, but with a salute to the continuing nobility of the promises themselves and the impulse within us to make them. And "14 Karat Gold" is a giddy, almost guilty song about new-found love, with a gambler's advice on how to get the most of it. These are my five favorites from the album, and they're as good as any group of five on any other album he ever did. The other songs are worthy too, not in the same class, but good enough to make this a landmark album for Gordon, and an essential one for any fan. Side note for those who think they can "get Gord" by buying any of the greatest hits compilations: don't even try. He's been too good for too long to get away with that approach. You should buy individual albums (or download selective tracks on each) to get a real appreciation for the man and his music. This album, or specifically the five songs mentioned here, are essential ingredients to a solid Lightfoot anthology.
