Music reviews of Sing Ariel / Mouse Metamorphosed Into a MaidMusic Review: a voice teacher and early music fan Rating: 5 Stars
AGITATING-FASCINATING-ENTERTAINING!
Alexander Goehr has composed a large number of choral works which skillfully combines his personal adaptation of modal technique with conventionally clear voice-leading and part-writing.
THE DEATH OF MOSES is a cantata in which Renaissance techniques are smoothly blended with modern devices. Stephen Cleobury leads an ensemble of vocalists, choirs and instrumentalists to create a powerful effect in this tragic work, which in many places is evocative of the neo-Classical style of Stravinsky.
The central and poignant dilemma in this work is God's refusal to let Moses enter the promised land to which he has lead his people, and above all Mose's refusal to accept the fate of all men which is death.
The soloists are astounding in their ability to meet the difficult vocal requirements of this composition. Stephen Richardson (baritone) in the role of Moses is magnificent with his deep, dark sound. The dramatic requirements of his part suits his voice timbre perfectly: anger, pleading, complaining and rage! Michael Chance's (countertenor) in the role of God gives off a great supernatural aura with his unique sombre, somewhat scary, yet commanding voice. (He also sings Jochebed, mother of Moses, at the end.)One of the most memorable moments is when Moses confronts God and asks Him why he has to die? The interchange between Moses and God is spectacular both dramatically and vocally!
Sarah Leonard (soprano) sings the role of a 'Soul' extremely well; she conveys a certain eerieness and is quite convincing as a resident of the spirit world. Tenor, Paul Robinson ,as something comparable to a narrator, sings with clarity and resonance.
The two choruses functioned well entering and exiting neatly and frequently as required by the score. The instrumentalists, who like the vocalists had some very challenging parts, performed skillfully and creatively as this work demanded.
SING ARIEL is a quasi-dramatic interpretation of English texts drawn from 15 poets ranging from Campion to Auden. This shimmering song cycle received a marvelous performance from soprano Lucy Shelton and fine ensemble playing directed by Oliver Knussen.
Shelton also turns in an ethereal account of THE MOUSE METAMORPHOSED INTO A MAID; a setting of unaccompanied soprano of Marianne Moore's magical poem.
This entire album is very enjoyable, but I wss most impressed by 'The Death of Moses'. Not only was it performed in an outstanding manner, but the music captivates and at times stuns; not at all to be avoided because it is contemporary (recorded in Fall, 1993).
