Music Review: Breathtaking and Beautiful.

Around 2001-2002, I started hanging out with more musicians who were more concerned about their art as opposed to which popular band they could emulate next. I got into a few new groups during that time and got introduced to a few more than I would become a fan of later on. However, there were two albums I was introduced to during that time that would ultimately shape my musical trajectory: Isis's Oceanic and this release by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
A guitarist friend of mine showed me this album because he thought I'd like it. Once I got into the album, I was captivated and fascinated by the music. It had the driving force of a rock band, but the added dimension of a string and percussion section filled the sound with a classical atmosphere that's still unseen by many others in music, let along the genre. I ran out, grabbed this album, and showed it to my buddy who I've been in several band with. He started crying once the buildup in "Moya" came to it's climax, proclaiming it was one of the most beautiful albums he'd ever heard.
The unintended plagarism in BBF3 notwithstanding*, this album is impressive and overwhelmingly original. If you've come across this on Amazon and haven't purchased the album yet, this is one of those "must haves" for your collection.
*Footnote: In the middle of BBF3, the band inserted a clip from an interview they conducted with a New Yorker/New Englander who called himself Blaise Bailey Finnegan III. After letting off some anti-American sentiments, he read a poem which he attributed to himself. After the album was released, it was brought to the band's attention that Blaze Bayley was actually Bruce Dickinson's replacement in Iron Maiden and that the overwhelming majority of the content in the interviewee's "original poem" were in fact lyrics to the Iron Maiden song "Virus" which can be found on their introspective Best Of The Beast.

This nine-piece Montreal collective sketches large-scale sonic landscapes using everything from strings to samples. Exceedingly plush and atmospheric, Slow Riot funnels a dramatic undercurrent through their music, adding an undeniably cinematic quality--especially in a section featuring the paranoid rants of a street person. The result is a grand and swirling melange with a sweeping scope and an elevating sense of tension. --S. DudaSlow Riot for New Zero Kanada may last only half an hour, but in that time it imparts an internal experience akin to that of watching a cast-of-thousands Hollywood epic. Godspeed You Black Emperor! are a Montreal-based nine-piece ensemble that uses massed strings, ringing electric guitars, and martial drums to evoke endless vistas and stir strong emotions. "Moya" opens with a solemn drone overlaid with resonant violin overtones, then builds to a crashing, unapologetically melodramatic climax. The CD's second (and final) selection, "Blaise Bailey Finegan III," is more ambitious. Like a director who grabs his audience's tear ducts with both fists, the group inserts field recordings of a ranting paranoiac between sweeping spaghetti-Western passages that rise to exhilarating multiple crescendos, then fall away to ghostly, echoed violins. --Bill Meyer
