Music Review: Very solid

God Dethroned have always been a really underrated band, and I think it might be because they've never been a snug fit in any pigeonhole. They are often tagged as a "blackened death metal" or "melodic death metal" band, but they don't really belong in either of those genres because they're not as brutally devastating as most blackened death bands (like, say, Vital Remains), and not as tuneful as most melodeath groups (see In Flames, for example). Thus, when mixed in with the wrong crowds, it's understandable how some listeners might have the wrong impression of this Dutch quartet.
But no matter what genre they belong to, one thing is for certain: God Dethroned make quality death metal product. 2005's "Lair of the White Worm" has more memorable hooks, grooves, hefty riffs, chilling atmospheres, pummeling blast beats, and great solos than I care to count. The result is an album that is unquestionably heavy and rocks very profusely, but it still retains a noticeable melodic side, making it remarkably easy to digest. Plus, God Dethroned add some innovation to their music by incorporating progressive and power metal influences (which are especially noticeable in the guitar solos).
Openers "Nihilism" and "Arch Enemy Spain" boast unique guitar harmonies, fast yet melodic guitar leads, fairly long and blazing solos, and ghoulish, retching vocals (plus, the former track has doomy riffs, and the latter is backed by jackhammering blast beats.) And after that, listeners are treated to the catchy, bobbing rhythm, fast, insistent drumming, and wailing solo of the blistering title track, and "Rusty Nails," which is a slower piece with an acoustic intro, thunderous guitars, and three awesome, melodic solos. Two other highlights include "Loyal To The Crown of God Dethroned," which is bursting with smoking, buzzsaw leads and rapid fire drums, and the disc closer, "Salt In Your Wounds," a particularly thrashy affair that features catchy riffs, a fiery lead, careening solos, pounding blasts, and a very hooky, memorable and spine-tingling chorus.
"Lair of the White Worm" might fail to reach truly mindblowing status, but it's still an extremely solid and completely listenable record (every track here is a keeper) that all metalheads should be highly encouraged to check out very soon.
