This was actually the first complete opera that I bought and I loved every second of it. Since then I have purchased several other operas, but this one still remains a favorite of mine. The Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque soloists express a moving "Ah, se intorno a quest'urna funesta" in the beginning of the opera, and yet still manage to come up with a captivatingly frightening "Chi mai dell 'Erebo" as Orfeo descends into the underworld. They are one of the highlights of this performance.
Derek Lee Ragin also plays a convincing Orfeo, and the combination of him and Sylvia McNair as Euridice creates some of the most lovely music on disk. While Ragin's tone is hardly perfect (especially in comparison to McNair's nearly perfect voice), the emotion he brings to the character in both the recitative passages and his moving "Che faro senza Euridice?", the opera's most famous piece, more than make up for it. Cyndia Sieden also makes a charming Amore, adding to the supreme vocal talent on this disk.
My only criticism is drawn out Ballo sections, particularly the last one right before the concluding "Trionfe Amore." They are tediously long and in an audio version of the disk, where one cannot see the choreography, unnecessary. Still, for the most part the orchestration is good, creating the desired effects with grace and charm.
An excellent production overall.
