Music Review: El Música Excelencia De Gloria Estefan!

Barely knowing one word of Spanish myself (ironic since I am part Puerto Rican) the title of this review is translated via a website and comes out roughly to mean The Musical Excellence Of Gloria Estefan for those out there even less knowing of Spanish than I. It's a beautiful langauge,as many in the World are and first and formost I just have to honor Gloria for going back to her cultural roots with this album. After nearly a decade at the point this was made singing in English with The Miami Sound Machine,themselves once an all Spanish singing wedding band from the Miami area Gloria and Emilio Estefan decided that reconnecting with the music that she'd baught via a poppier style to the American mainstream only years earlier was deserved of being presented by her to the public uncut. Part of that meant singing the entire album in Spanish. Now for those people who do know little to none of the langauge that's alright;Gloria baught us into her vision by including English translations to all the lyrics and it's even possible to pick up a little of the Spanish lanuage by singing the songs and matching them to the English lyric translations. And that mild educational aspect is a big aspect of this album because it encompassess the music as well. With many of the lyricspenned by Gloria herself along with the compositions of Jorge Luis Piloto,Juanita Marquez and the like this album is,by and large a lively and involving set of high energy,sensual and emotionally charged salsa pieces that are wonderfully and beautifully chorded enough to listen to casual and terrific dance music as well. Clear early 90's sound aside this album is musically very traditional Cuban/Latin style big band and small group style music with such powerful songs as the title song (translating to "My Homeland","Si Senor","Volveras" and "No Hay Mal Que Por Bien No Venga". There are also a handful of slower latin ballads such as "Con Los Anos Que Me Quedan" and "Mi Buen Amor",showcasing that classic Spanish romanticism. The album ends on a wonderful high octane note with "Tradicion",a song Gloria and Emilio actually wrote about bringing this style of music to an audience outside the usual foreign music market and that it could be enjoyed and understood on it's own without too much preachiness. It's presented in vibrant Cuban jazz setting with some fiery sax,trumpet and persussion effects courtesy of musicians such as Paquito D'Rivera,Arturo Sandoval and the immortal Tito Puente. This not only began Gloria's rekindled interest in recording music in her native language but also succeeded in it's mission to be this music to a culture that may not speak the language entirely but can find a way to embrace it all the same. And,if those who like me are a bit confused by the language of the lyrics,which by the way Gloria sings in a voice finer and more rangey and fire than even before listening to the band on these cuts is also sure fire proof that it's true about music speaking louder than words and being as close to a universal language as anyone could ask.
