Music Review: Superb Compilation, Great Transfers

I have the original 1959 RCA deluxe set ("For The Very First Time") from which the bulk of these selections were drawn, and the best thing I can say about the digital transfers is that the engineers didn't mess up a very good thing. The sound is clear and lifelike, and not overprocessed. The music itself is terrific. The Miller band was at the peak of its prowess and popularity, and in these live performances, it is like a well-oiled machine, but playing perhaps a bit looser and livelier than in the studio. Especially welcome are a number of swinging Billy May arrangements and trumpet features. There is also a number of Miller medleys ("Something old, new, borrowed and blue"). None of the selections from the 1959 album had been covered in studio sessions and I don't believe many of these performances have been released on CD since then. With CD format, more track space was available, so some additional "common" Miller live tracks have been added, and none the worse for that. This is a real time capsule, and if you want an idea of what the fuss about the Miller organization, and for that matter the whole big band phenomenon, was all about, this set is a great place to start. If you are already a fan, it is indispensible.
