Music reviews of Meet Glen Campbell (Eco)

Music Review: The Champ Comes Back
Rating: 5 Stars

Most of you reading this are old friends of Glen Campbell wondering whether or not to plunk down your money for this CD. If you read any other reviews you probably have already made up your mind. If not, take it from an old friend, Glen still has it, and maybe even better than ever before. Considering his age and the fact that I thought he was dun dissappear'd since I saw a mug shot of him, you are in for quite a treat. One simple word: Amazing. I think that has been used in every review here.

If you are young and/or new to the gentleman Glen Campbell and maybe only know him through your parents records or were a hard-core rocker and just decided to dip into things you might have missed because you thought Glen wasn't "cool" enough, well this CD is the place to be. Aptly titled Meet Glen Campbell, it fills the need for old fans who have all his records and now he is RE-Introducing himself in a big way. If you are one of those, then go ahead and buy this CD. If you are a young-un and curious why a 72 year old fart is doing Foo Fighters and Green Day, well it's because he has always been way more than cool. Read on...

Below, I have a short Meet Glen Campbell of my own for the newbies. And if you don't have songs like Gentle On My Mind, By The Time We Get To Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Galveston, or Rhinestone Cowboy in your collection, then I recommend you go shop for this CD at a well known nation-wide retailer who has an "exclusive" release of this CD with those 5 hit single bonus tracks, "remixed" for 2008. Warning to all you fans who bought this from Amazon and didn't know about the "other version", those "remixes" are really just the original masters cleaned up extraordinaire by Raymond and Willing who produced/engineered this album. The sound on those is incredible, you hear instruments and sounds buried by the original tape process that released them in "hi-fi", remember that word? If you have already bought a box or two of Glen Campbell all remastered and prettified, then you are losing out on nothing, buy this CD any place you like.

Meet Glen Campbell:
Glen was born in a tiny one horse town in Arkansas (population just over 100). He could play by ear on a guitar what he just heard as a youth and so his parents encouraged him to keep playing through his teenage years. In 1958 he moved to Los Angeles to become a studio session musician. In 1959 he joined with two other guitarists and a drummer to form The Champs and had a hit single with Tequila! (Betcha didn't know that!) He was in great demand as a studio player through the early 60's and Phil Spector made him a permanent musician in The Wall Of Sound: Hal Blaine on drums, Glen on lead guitar, Leon Russell on Keyboards, Steve Douglas sax, Carol Kaye bass, Sonny Bono arrangements and song production. The Wall Of Sound (later calling themselves The Wrecking Crew as "wall of sound" became a name for a production process) literally backed up every Phil Spector act from The Ronettes, The Crystals, The Teddy Bears, to The Righteous Brothers, Ike & Tina Turner, Gene Pitney, and Carol King's girl groups. As a session player with or without The Wrecking Crew, Glen played guitar on many records by Bobby Darin, Ricky Nelson, the Kingston Trio, Merle Haggard, The Monkeys, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Frankie Laine, The Association, Jan & Dean, The Mamas & The Papas, and many more. In 1964, Brian Wilson brought Glen in to the studio to assist The Beach Boys in recording their Opus, Pet Sounds. When Brian became ill and stayed in bed for the next two years, Glen filled his position and found his own "voice" singing with the group. He was instrumental in assisting Dennis, Mike and Carl to get Brian up and back into the studio to finish Pet Sounds, an album The Beatles declare inspired them to make Sgt Pepper's. Glen's signature work can be heard specifically on Sinatra's Strangers In The Night, The Righteous Brothers You've Lost That Loving Feeling, The Mamas & The Papas California Dreamin', and The Monkees I'm A Believer. In 1965 Glen appeared on film playing guitar to Steve McQueen in Baby The Rain Must Fall. Capitol records signed him on as a solo artist and he released several unsuccessful singles written for him by Brian Wilson and Buffy St. Marie, and Capitol was considering dropping him when producer Al Delory brought him a "dylanesque" song by John Hartford. They recorded and released Gentle On My Mind in 1967, the rest is history.

Now back to Meet Glen Campbell (CD)...

Beautiful. Work of Art. Should be nominated for the next Grammy Award. Best new recording by a veteran performer since Dylan's Modern Times. Makes the Rolling Stones new stuff sound like toilet water going down the drain. Finally: Glen's cover of John and Yoko's Grow Old With Me may be the best recording of a "Beatle" song I have heard in 20 years or more. It is definitely the best cover since Fiona Apple did Across The Universe for the film Pleasantville in 1998. Glen makes Time Of Your Life sound as if it was written for him! The Production on this CD makes it sound like Best New Artist Of The Year. Just think about that for a minute. In 1959, Glen Campbell was fingering and fretting guitar strings and shouting "tequila!" on a brand new hit single in a hot new genre called rock and roll. Now listen to him!!! Amazing...
