I'm still trying to figure out which version is the "real" Simon Boccanegra. For anyone who loves this opera, this must be added to the collection (as I'm writing I'm hearing the 1961 [Gobbi] by Gala. It's one of my favorites. But to continue....

What hits one between the ears immediately is a different Prologue. Instead of those lyrical violins, we have a bit of bombast. I'm not objecting, merely observing. Another really noticeable difference is the Amelia, Joella Ligi. For one thing, she sings the - okay, we'll call it a cabaletta, although it really isn't - after Come di quest'ora bruna... and if anyone has ever recorded it before, I haven't heard it.

Ligi also either tosses in or Verdi actually wrote some highs that sound out with some frequency in this recording. I'm not objecting, although Ligi's voice is a bit harsh on those highs and they are startling enough to have me wonder who wrote what and when.

The rest of the cast of more than merely adequate - you'll have your own opinions. Personally, I'm often suspicious of opera performed in the UK (not always, I hasten to say, although one of the greatest lyrical coloraturas isn't my favorite by any means).

Do buy this opera and while you're at it, Gustavus III, and trust the Swedes.
