Music Review: A charismatic singer not quite suited to Verdi style

I've admired Cura's charisma and musicality since he first appeared on the scene, but he's only 47, and I haven't heard from him in a while. The voice is baritonal in coloring, which can make it a bit dull in some registers, but there's plenty of metal on top. cura controls his voice without wobble, and the tone is individual form top to bottom. (The disparaging remarks posted here mostly seem silly to me.) He's also quite ambitious, as witness the feat -- or is it a gimmick? -- of taking over the conductor's duties on this Verdi recital. To be fair, Cura trained as a conductor first and came to singing later.
Sadly, he doesn't seem to be in vest voice here. He's rahter thoaty and always aggressive in his attack. Roberto Alagna has the same fault to a much greater degree but continues to get good reviews (when he's not being booed at La Scala), and frankly, I'd rather hear Cura's honest heroic tenor than the puffed up efforts of Ramon Vargas and Marcelo Alvarez, both fine lyric singers but two sizes too small vocally on their respective Verdi recitals.
In any case, Cura conducts respectably and his singing was enjoyable, even if his real metier is verismo from Cav and Pag through Puccini.
Description of Verdi Arias
This recital shows off the extraordinary dual talents of Jos? Cura as tenor and conductor, and, much as envy might compel one to say he should stick to one or the other, conscience demands otherwise. He does a superb job in both spheres--and, more than that, his intuitive and gripping sense of drama links them inextricably. The accompaniments are bound up with the vocal line in compelling and exciting ways: every slight expansion of a phrase, every passionate quickening of tempo, every moment of vocal calm or storm, is felt in the orchestra. His choice of tempi are not always conventional, either: "De' miei bollenti spiriti" from La traviata is speedier than you might have heard it before, for example, but it perfectly captures Alfredo's youthful ardor. Cura's feeling for the heart of a situation is backed up by a glorious voice, with a remarkably full baritonal range and a thrilling top--and he seems to have a rainbow palette of colors to lighten or darken the sound as necessary. One quibble is that he sings "Di quella pira" from Il trovatore a semitone low. But, overall, this is a wonderful recording of a wonderful voice. --Warwick ThompsonGeneral CDs
