Music Review: jaw-dropping

You thought you knew this opera? Think again. Fricsay's orchestra will surprise you at every turn. It's not that he's trying to "say something new" or "make an impression". It's just that his musical power, and that of his superb players, give the entire work a new sheen. If you can get over the idea of hearing the text in a language other than Italian, you will be enriched beyond your expectations. Rita Streich and Josef Metternich are as fine a Gilda and Rigoletto as ever bestrode the stage. Forget about Hegel's dictum (if indeed you ever knew it) regarding the need for Italian voices in Italian opera. Streich and Metternich take to these roles as if they had grown up with them. For me, they're almost better than the conventional Italianate interpreters. Schock is remarkably pleasing as the Duke, and having the great Margarete Klose as Maddalena is deluxe casting indeed. To top it all off, the recorded sound (German radio, 1950) is as sweet, full and detailed as you could wish for. Snap up this one and don't look back.
