Music Review: Definitely Not the Same Old Opera Compilation

I was so pleased with the first #1 Opera Album that I was happy to purchase #II. This is the type of collection that takes listeners beyond the usual group of most popular opera pieces. Together you have a treasure trove of good living room listening or driving music. There are a few classics such as "Der Holle Rache" from "Die Zauberflote," but you will also find the delightful "Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Papagena!" duet from the same opera, which is not found in the other CDs on the racks. This time the pieces are grouped together by opera (not scattered throughout as in the first CD), which I think adds enjoyment to the listening experience. No more track surfing to find the other songs from the same opera.

The artists are top notch as well: Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Terfel, Fleming and Tebaldi to name a few. Of particular note is Birgit Nilsson's aria from "Tristan und Isolde" which closes the album, and "La Mama Morta" from "Andrea Chenier" sung by Montserrat Caballe. If you've heard these performances repeated on other albums, you'll like the uniqueness to be found here. Good recordings, no instrumentals, and a bargain. Fill holes in your collection with this one.
