I have to agree with the reviews here--this is the best all-around recording of La Traviata that I've found. There are other recordings with exceptional aspects (I'd include Anna Moffo's and Maria Callas's recordings in this category), but this is solid all around. The general feel is light, precise, and vibrant. The orchestra and chorus perform well, and the soloists are all pretty solid as well.
The only exception I'd take would be with Placido Domingo as Alfredo. He's clearly more of a dramatic tenor than the lyric tenor that Alfredo demands, and suffers because of it. This is most obvious at the end of "O mio rimorso" leading up to the high note, where there's definitely some funny recording stuff going on. To my ear, it sounds like he re-recorded it, as the sound of his voice suddenly changes dramatically--there are recording artifacts that make it sound like he's closer to the microphone than he is in the rest of the opera. But other than that one moment, he generally doesn't make me cringe.
In any case, with that oddity notwithstanding, I heartily recommend this recording--it's typically the first recording of La Traviata that a reach for.

The best Traviata on disc? If not, it's within hailing distance. No true Verdian would want to be without Callas's 1955 live recording, and it's hard not to love those starring Moffo, Caballe, Scotto, Sutherland, and de los Angeles among others. But this set offers the best all-round combination of excellent sound, fine singing, and dynamic conducting. Ileana Cotrubas is a wonderfully spontaneous Violetta, conveying the passion and vulnerability of the character. Only Callas among her starry rivals on disc can match Cotrubas's emotional and vocal mastery here. Domingo sings with ardor, and Milnes uses his beautiful voice to good effect as Germont. But it's Carlos Kleiber's show, and that enigmatic conductor leads the most energetic Traviata since Toscanini. Tempos are fast, but his sense of theatricality is unerring--this is one of those studio recordings that captures the sense of being at the opera house listening to one of those rare performances when everything clicks. --Dan DavisGeneral CDs
