Music Review: Fresh, beautiful, poignant

Not knowing a word of Spanish has not prevented me from finding the Gysy Kings and more specifically this CD to be a work of life-affirming profundity. A few of their ballads (Habla Me, No Volvere, Triste Pena) give me chills. And their faster, "wall-of-guitars" songs (Baila Me, El Mauro) are exhilarating and exciting in a way I've never heard elsewhere. This is music as it should be, simple, affecting, galvanizing, resonant. If you're not happy to be alive after listening to Baila Me, I'll send you twelve bucks. Nicolas Reyes has a powerful, unique delivery in which he knows exactly where the notes are but instead warbles his way to them and around them. Thank God this man found his true calling. What a loss for music (and for my life) it would be if he hadn't found a career as a singer.
