Music Review: TV recording with okay sound, poor documentation

Consort of Musicke completists (which includes me I'm afraid) will probably want to add this to their collection poste haste, but this is not their best disc. The recital starts with a selection of 11 from the 37 madrigals by Vecchi published under the name Selva di varia ricreatione in 1590, together with 8 others by Rore, Marenzio, Gastoldi, Orso and the German Werrecore. These are a bit more serious that the fun and games usually associated with Vecchi's name. The recital was recorded by Swiss TV in 1982-84 and I don't believe was issued on CD prior to this 1999 release on the Aura label. The sound is reasonable for a TV studio. Unfortunately it doesn't have texts - not even in Italian - which is absolutely essential to this kind of music, Vecchi in particular. Twenty plus years later the Consort sounds a bit consciously "early music movement" compared to the more fluid recent recordings by Cantus Colln, La Venexiana, Concerto Italiano, etc. But still, without Rooley the next generation wouldn't have been possible.
