Music Review: Beautifully played and recorded .... yet

I have not listened to this recording as often as I thought I would when I bought it a few years ago.
The music is beautifully played, almost to perfection, I may add, and the interpretations are very fine, indeed. Yet I have not found this recording as exciting as some of the other Concerto Palatino recordings. Go figure?
The San Petronio organs in Bologna do have a very sweet sound and work beautifully well with cornetts and trombones of Concerto Palatino, and the organs are a highlight of the recording. Concerto Palatino employs four cornetts, two violins and six trombones in this recording, and they present us with a selection of canzons and sonatas from the Sacrę Symphonię, 1597, and Canzoni e sonate, 1615, collections of music of Giovanni Gabrieli. It must be noted that in a couple of works, lines actually specified for the cornetto have actually been played here on violins, for no apparent reason! Canzon in echo duodecimi toni à 10 "accomdata per concertar con l'organo" was very specifically scored for eight cornetti, two trombones and two organs. One of the few works in which Gabrieli went to the trouble of being so specific [I have a copy of the score in my archives]. Concerto Palatino "fudge" the score, because they didn't employ enough cornett players for this recording. I found this a trifle unacceptable from one of the world's leading cornett & sackbut ensembles.
However, those who do love the music of Giovanni Gabrieli will find much to enjoy in this recording and I generally recommend this recording to all music lovers, in spite of my few quibbles.
