Music Review: A Mediocre Performance

Opera singers are rarely good choices for liturgical works such as Pergolesi's and this album is a perfect example. Although Dutoit is an accomplished conductor and directed this piece well, the operatic training of Bartoli and Anderson for this piece led to a completely inappropriate interpretation and performance of this piece.
Bartoli and Anderson are reputed and accomplished divas for opera but not liturgical works. Opera training and singing is aimed towards a completely different use of voice than liturgical works. Opera training is based on the traditions of 19th century and the Romantic period and somewhat overlaps with the Rococco period styles of Mozart. The training emphasizes on certain voice techniques that will add either drama or comedy to the performance depending on the theme of the opera. Liturgical pieces are much more reserved in voice techniques and are aimed towards reflecting a stoic sorrow and ecstatic joy and such techniques vary on whether the piece is akin to Mozart's "Exultate Jublilate" which is joyous, light, and graceful, or a requiem that is generally reflective and somber. Bartoli and Anderson simply do not have that training and their voices therefore make the piece sound like a light opera rather than a Sabat Mater or a Salve Regina that tend to come closer in mood to a requiem. Dutoit conducted the piece very well however and that is a redeeming quality that brings it to average. Nevertheless, I was very disappointed and I will stick to opera with regards to Anderson and Bartolli. They are simply not choir or liturgical singers and it sure sounds like it.
Overall, I didn't like this performance and I regret having bought it. Dutoit is great as usual in his direction but Bartoli and Anderson simply don't have the voice training for such pieces: they are opera singers and are not trained in liturgical works for voice. This is not a good investment as there are better performances out there by choirs or specialists in liturgical works that are properly trained to sing these works.
