Music Review: suffers from live recording issues

This recording involves the cast of Muti's revival of a "complete" William Tell with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino--a landmark effort. The score that was originally published in the 1800s was rushed to the press while Rossini's final opera was still in production; as a result, many changes and additions were not taken into account. After years of "traditional" cuts and shortened performances, Guillaume Tell finally saw performance again in its entirety, although in Italian rather than French.

I was so excited to find this recording of the 1972 performance--I'm a huge fan of Eva Marton. Unfortunately, this is a live recording and suffers from all the possible flaws of a bootleg: audience noise, terrible balance (was it recorded from the bass side of the pit, or maybe RIGHT next to the timpani???), that "underwater" blurry sound quality, and of course the loss of the singers' timbre. In "Selva opaca" Marton sounds like she's roughly a football field away, while most of the orchestra sounds like it's directly miked (and then put through a "beneath the ocean" effects processor).

That said, the voices are lovely--what one can hear of them--and of course Muti gets great results. The cello ensemble in the overture is fantastic, the range of tempi and the phrasing/expression all great. It's worthwhile to give this a hearing, just to have a sense of what this cast and Muti were up to as interpreters... but if you're just getting a good (Italian) version of the opera to listen to, the later Muti recording (La Scala, Studer, Merritt, Zancanaro) or perhaps the Chailly recording with Freni and Pavarotti.

And if you want to hear the opera as it was meant to be, of COURSE get the French version with Bacquier, Gedda and Montserrat Caballe.
