Music Review: How famous, really?

Although the title of this disc suggests otherwise, I wonder how many reasonably well-informed historical voice-fanciers have actually heard or even heard of all four baritones billed here as "famous"? And do they indeed deserve that epithet? I will admit having heard of only one and my puzzlement is further compounded by the fact that I have to assume that this is a Preiser disc as nowhere in the packaging does that label name appear and only on the disc itself may the series title "Lebendige Vergangenheit" ("Living Yesterdays" or "Past", I suppose) be found, as if they are too bashful to declare their identity. All the tracks here were recorded between 1928 and 1936 in very immediate and satisfactory sound without much distortion or undue hiss. Only one track features a second singer: the dark-toned Alexander Sved's "Il trovatore" duet with Viorica Ursuleac, whom I have always found to be an acquired taste.

It is certainly an interesting a compilation of what I would term very fine, if not necessarily spectacular, baritones of a firmness and clarity rarer today. For me,the two most attractive are the two darkest and most resonant voices: those of the first and last singers, Umberto Urbano and Sved. Both Sarobe and Hrzic produce a lighter, somewhat more nasal sound, better suited to baritone roles with a slightly higher tessitura and more emphasis upon legato than the preponderance of weightier Verdi roles allocated to Urbano and Sved, but all were clearer highly versatile singers with powerful instruments capable of considerable refinement.

Urbano has the most intrinsically beautiful tone and is the only singer to sound unmistakably Italian in his combination of richness and "bite", although just occasionally a little unsteadiness obtrudes and the vibrato flutters. His finest performance here is, I think, "Il balen" from "Il trovatore"; for delicacy and sensitivity, however, I much enjoyed Hrzic in both gorgeous showpiece arias from "Pique Dame" and "Die tote Stadt"; he has a top G that blooms marvellously. The anthology has been cunningly compiled to allow us sometimes to compare the singers in the same role but in different arias; hence Urbano's urbane, oleaginous Iago contrasts with Sarobe's more incisive, bestial assumption.

Some of the orchestral playing under a conductor called Julius Prüwer in Sarobe's arias is scrappy but that hardly matters. This is a fascinating and rewarding introduction to four estimable singers with whom the average punter will not be familiar.
