Music Review: Fantastic Even Before You Consider the Price

This is one of my favorite classical sets. I own several, and I've listened to many more, and I've never encountered a set where every single song was really good. And I'm talking about sets labeled "best of . . ." or something like that. I mean every single song in this set is fantastic. The other reviewer notes that they often only give parts of the song. This is a feature, not a bug. Ask yourself if you really want to listen to the entire first movement of Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto. Let's be honest: most of it is boring. I own a couple versions of the entire concierto, but I like how this set just plays my favorite part. It's that way with a lot of songs.

Ok, that's a bit optimistic. It does cut songs off when I would have liked a little more, but if it didn't, it would be a ten-cd set and would cost a fortune. As it is, in includes a huge number of songs, and only the best parts of those that it does abridge.

The only thing I didn't like about this set was that the audio isn't among the best. The other reviewer really exaggerates it. It's not bad. It's just not really fine quality sound. Similarly, the performances may not be the best. I base that comment on the fact that the "1812 Overture" used timpani instead of canons. I'm not an expert on performances, so the others may also have taken shortcuts that detract from the piece. This is just the only one I noticed.

So to sum it up. This is actually one of my favorite sets of music. Every single piece is one that I love, and cuts out the boring parts of music that is too long to put in a collection like this. The audio isn't the best, but the advantages of the set more than make up for that.
