Music Review: A Bland Reissue for a Great Album!

This album was originally released in 1969 and happens to be Gilberto Gil's greatest album. This 2008 reissue from Water, on the other hand, is far from the best. I say this because, for one, the artwork is severly cropped, so that the Philips recording company logo couldn't be seen on here. This reissue contains all of the original 9 songs that were on the album. However, the five bonus tracks that are on the Philips/Mercury/Universal CD reissues (1998 & 2006) of this album are missing. I find this odd because many of the Gilberto Gil reissues that Water has brought out on CD contains all of the bonus tracks that were on the 1998 & 2006 CD reissues for those particular albums, such as the 1968 self-titled album, the 1971 self-titled album and even "Expresso 2222". The bonus tracks for those albums are contained on the Water reissues. However, there are no bonus tracks for this album at all. This may be great to have for those of you who have it hard trying to find any of the old Universal reissues. However, if you can find the old Universal reissues on CD with the 5 bonus tracks added along with the original album, skip this one at all costs!

Originally released in 1969, this is Gilberto Gil's second self-titled album in as many years. Perhaps not as consistent as the previous year's effort this is still a massive slab of Tropicalia, and one of the most forward-thinking pop albums to ever come out of Brazil. Featuring his first major hit Aquele Abraço and other classics like Volks Volkswagen Blue and Cérebro Eletrónico, Gilberto Gil manages to incorporate psychedelic experimentation, blues, rock, samba and post bossa nova into a whole much greater than the sum of its parts.
