Music Review: Beautiful performance of a dramatic mass

I love Verdi's Requiem and Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, so I was very much looking forward to listening to this mass. Although it doesn't speak to me with the same intensity as these other masses by Italian opera masters, this is a beautiful performance of a very interesting mass that clearly shows off Puccini's flair for drama and storytelling.
The best part of this recording is the performance -- rich and satisfying, beautifully played by the Philharmonia Orchestra under conductor Claudio Scimone. The singing, spearheaded by Jose Carreras is spectacular. Top-notch all around.
The composition itself is certainly quite different, and probably unique within the sacred music literature. Puccini wrote this when he was a student at only age 17, as a kind of a graduation exercise. He had already decided he was going into opera -- and this career choice is pretty apparent in the composition. It is filled with fantastic arias and has the sound and feel of a theater or performance work more than a mass.
It hasn't been given the name "Messa di Gloria" -- an apocryphal name that has stuck better than Puccini's own "Messa a quattro voci" -- for nothing. The "Gloria" for tenor and choir is by far the dominant section of the mass, at over 20 minutes with nine separate sections. It was conceived by Puccini as its own work and later incorporated into the larger mass. The 16-minute "Credo" was also conceived separately and placed into the mass.
The other sections -- the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei -- are much shorter and less elaborate. This is a weakness, and the effect is that the composition isn't really very well integrated and doesn't form a very cohesive whole. So in the end, I was less impressed by this mass than with the tour de force compositions of Verdi and Rossini mentioned earlier.
I still give the CD five stars, though. For all its faults, this really is a work you should hear -- the Credo and especially the Gloria contain sublime and dramatic moments that foreshadow Puccini's later operatic work. And the performance is outstanding. Overall this disc is very much worthwhile.
There are two other works on the CD -- the Preludio Sinfonico and Capriccio Sinfonico, both performed by the Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra under Claudio Scimone. Both pieces are very pleasant, well performed, and a good listen to round out the program.
