Music reviews of Puccini - La Bohème / Hendricks, Carreras, Quilico, Blasi, Cowan, Ellero D'Artegna; Conlon (1987 film)Music Review: Deserves a bit of respect
It should be noted that this recording was made for a televised film version of La Boheme for French television, and so some of the conducting is a little self-conscious as if done for visual effect. However, it is not a bad version of this opera and in some places it is marvellous. Take the singing of Hendricks as Mimi. She does a nice job with the end of Act I and I think she does an admirable job the rest of the way. True, she has a tremendous vibrato to her voice and so this may become annoying after repeated listenings. Blasi as Musetta is fabulous and the singing of Gino Quilico is also outstanding in my opinion. The one real disappointment is Carreras. I don't know if this recording was made before or after his bout with leukemia, but on the high notes he unfortunately cannot keep the tone steady and pure. It sounds a little pinched. It is a shame because when he was in his prime his voice was truly a wonderful instrument. His singing here is full of character however, and in some cases he does a fine job singing more softly. As a whole it is not a bad set, but it must be said that it does not compete with the classic sets of Karajan, Beecham or Serafin.
