Music Review: The young Corelli in full flight

This ravishing compilation from 2007 exists behind a veil of obscurity, as often happens with a label like Urania. I don't think these verismo arias -- the territory of Corelli's greatest strengths -- are filched from the EMI or RCA catalog, where almost all of the singer's commercial releases come from. Nor are they live performances. The sound is quite good, in fact. Corelli doesn't indulge in too much excess in the histrionics department, making it easy to rejoice in his power and tone. Since my version is a download lacking notes, I can't date anything here, but it certainly sounds like the young Corelli.

Of course, all of these arias overlap many other versions form him, but to my ears, this is the freshest, most charismatic collection of them. The conductors, although unknown to me, are at least competent. Slight changes in sound quality indicate where one source gives way to another. Four selections from Aida have been tacked on to the very end. Otherwise, the arias come from where you'd expect: Puccini (Turandot, Fanciulla del West, Madame Butterfly), Mascagni (Cavalleria rusticana, Lodoletta), Giordano (Andreas Chenier, Fedora), Cilea (Adriana Lecouvreur), and Leoncavallo (Pagliacci), with the only rarities are two: the obscure aria from 'Lodoletta', and a long sequence from Fedora ('Mia madre...vedi, io piango') where Corelli really dives into the lachrymose. He was never happier than when swimming in a vat of tears. He hits "Addio, fiorito asil" with a howitzer, but that's Corelli, and to many ears that's verismo. In other words, a perfect match.

P.S. - A collector informs me that my guess was right. This CD derives from Corelli's earliest recordings for Cetra.
