Music Review: One of Wu's Most Overlooked 4.5 stars

When mentioning top Wu solo album's, "Ironman" gets lost in the shuffle with albums like "Liquid Swords" and "Only built 4 Cuban Linx". Even if the album is not as good as those two, it definitely deserves mention and praise. Like many of the best from Wu, the albums majority is produced by Rza, only one track is not a rza production. The albums beats sound significantly different then those of previous Rza produced albums, including a few more soul samples. The album offers almost all of the clan's members with most songs featuring raekwon and many with cappadonna. Ghost also proves on this album he is one of the most talented mc's in the clan with his gambino flow which also raekwon uses. The album opens up with a long movie sample and then goes into one of the best tracks on the album "Iron Maiden", which features two very good verses from Raekwon and Ghostface and a decent one from Cappadonna which doesn't flow over Rza's excellent beat like the other two do. One of my favorite songs on the album is "260" which has a very intertesting horn sounding beat with a soul sample as well. I think this song really shows the creativity of Rza as a producer and the artistic view of the entire clan, beats like this are what seperate the group from other Hip-Hop acts. The following song is the dark "Assassination Day" which starts off a little lighter and then goes into the darkness which is first rapped over by INS The rebel who of course, throws in a sick verse. Rza also spits on the track and he also leaves a heavy dent with another sick verse. Ghost and Raekwon do the same. "Daytona 500" takes the same path as "Iron Maiden" though not quite as good, still one of the best on the album. Towards the end the album seems to get a bit more personal as Ghost spits more about his life. A very good but unexpected track from a wu record is "All that I Got is You" featuring Mary J Blige. The beat consists of basically a piano and violin but is put together very well. It is one of the best slow hip-hop joints of all time. Lyrically, Ghost speaks about his rough life growing up and Mary J, who at this point had already done tracks with Wu Members (All I Need Remix with Meth), adds an excellent R&B chorus. "Ironman" takes a little bit different path then other solo wu projects but stays true to wu criteria. It has beats very different then what is mostly out there and is lyrically excellent. The album deserves a much higher level of respect then it gets. I will admit, when I first bought it I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it is, but with a few listens, it definitely proves its greatness. It does have its dull parts, but overall it is amongst the best from Wu, Period.
