Music Review: For fans of FSOL, Loop Guru, or John Zorn

Lately there's been a whole back to the 60s approach on two flanks of the current scene- the freak-folk movement, and more surprisingly, in the world of electronic music, as seen by attempts to replicate that period psychedelic feel by units such as Future Sounds of London and Loop Guru. But the guy who beat them all to it, did it at the time in 1968, way ahead of his time, and for that reason, the second CD of this collection is a must have (I can do without most of the first CD, although some of the last few tracks on that disc show him as a predecessor of Eno or the Orb in what became known as "ambient", along with Raymond Scott). In his "Shabbat for Today", you get all the chord changes and wierd timbres that typified the late 60s sound, in a manner so stereotypical and so surprising that it beats FSOL's Amorphous Androgynous (as in "the isness", "alice in ultraland", etc). Those wonderful chromatic chord changes, the bass lines and drum patterns of the "age of aquarius", layered over trippy and campy renderings of the Hebrew prayer, is almost a musicological preservation, a time-capsule of a sound that everyone now wants to emulate yet seems so elusive. So FSOL- Gershon Kingsley beat you to it. And for those who collect Tzaddik label releases, well, this fits right in there...
