Music Review: terrific songs from Gerry & The Pacemakers

Gerry & The Pacemakers put out a lot of music when they were a group; and this album proves it. The music on the album is very, very good; and fans will like this album. This also makes a particularly good starter CD for people just getting into Gerry & The Pacemakers. The quality of the sound is excellent and that artwork is great!

The album starts with the group performing "How Do You Do It." "How Do You Do It" was always one of my favorite tunes by this band; the musical interlude is awesome and they do this one up right! "It's Happened to Me" has a great beat and these pros ace this seemingly effortlessly. "It's Happened to Me" is quite well done; but for an even better tune listen for "Pretend." "Pretend" is a rockin' tune that gets the royal treatment from Gerry & The Pacemakers; they perform this to perfection--and beyond! I love it.

"Hello Little Girl" has that `60s "British Invasion" sound I love so much; and "You'll Never Walk Alone" by Rodgers and Hammerstein is a show tune that gets the royal treatment from Gerry & The Pacemakers. They perform this beautifully.

"It's All Right" also has that Gerry & The Pacemakers flavor; the keyboard work enhances the musical arrangement for this tune. "You're the Reason" rocks, too--great! "You've Got What I Like" is memorable; this love song in a rock and roll style ballad really works well; and I really like their classic hit "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying." "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" is nothing short of a masterpiece--this music is all THAT good. In addition, "Show Me That You Care" uses the drums and guitars well--but their vocals are never drowned out by the music. Awesome!

"Ferry Cross the Mersey" is a tune I love to hear anytime; Gerry & The Pacemakers do this better than any other group ever could and that's grand. The music fits in perfectly with the vocals. "I'll Be There" has a great arrangement with the strings enhancing it greatly; "I'll Be There" is one of my favorite numbers on this album and Gerry & The Pacemakers deliver this without letting go of a single superfluous note! "Walk Hand in Hand" is most passionate; I'm very impressed with this group's fine ability to make this ballad shine bright!

"La La La" is a fun tune. "Girl on a Swing" is very pretty; they do this faultlessly. Sadly, "Girl on a Swing" would be their last chart-hitting single. The CD ends strong with Gerry & The Pacemakers performing "Fool to Myself." "Fool to Myself" features this group at their usual very best; they never falter.

Gerry & The Pacemakers may no longer be together; but with albums like this one we can still enjoy and celebrate their wonderful artistry. This is especially good for newcomers to Gerry & The Pacemakers; and people who like that "Mersey beat sound;" would do well to add this to their music collections. Diehard fans may want to consider the two CD set which is also entitled The Best Of Gerry & The Pacemakers or the four CD set entitled You'll Never Walk Alone: The EMI Years 1963-1966.
