Music Review: Stop blaming Berganza, blame Abbado instead

I find it strange that some reviewers are blaming Berganza for ruining this recording, calling her cold, boring, bloodless... she indeed is all of the above, but so too is Domingo, Milnes and Cotrubas, all of these extremely respectable singers are unusually boring to listen to here. This is a very strong cast of singers; blame ultimately lies in the far too lightweight and shallow conducting of Abbado. I find it laughable to suggest that typical Abbado is boring, but even the best conductors will occasionally turn out flops, and this is certainly one of Abbado's biggest and most disappointing flops. In addition, the often overpolished and too soft production that wreaks many of Abbado's recordings is more evident here than in any of his recordings.

As far as dialogue Carmen goes (YES RECRETIVO CARMENS ARE ALL GARBAGE) Solti's Carmen is probably the best; Troyanos/Domingo/van Dam/Te Kanawa is a mouth-watering cast that delivers and Solti's passionate and powerful conducting is far superior to Abbado's. The somewhat underrated Maazel recording is worth mentioning too, either way there are lots of Carmen which are far superior to Abbado's.
