Music reviews of Soliloquy

Music Review: A pianistic approach to solo jazz guitar
Rating: 5 Stars

George Van Eps may not be as well-known for solo jazz guitar as Joe Pass, Lenny Breau, Martin Taylor, etc., but he deserves to be. Van Eps was among the first to develop a seven-string guitar, which he called a lap piano. The lap piano comes from adding a bass string to a conventional six-string guitar, as opposed to Lenny Breau's guitar, which added a high string. It is no accident that Van Eps called his instrument a lap piano-- his approach to the instrument is based on the piano. Eps came of age in the era of swing, when guitarists were even less common as soloists (Django, Charlie Christian, Les Paul, George Barnes et al. were exceptions to the rule). So, his approach was based more around chords than single note lead lines. While Joe Pass' famous solo recordings were made by switching quickly between lead and rhythm lines, Van Eps stuck almost entirely to piano-based chords and relatively mellow sounds. That may sound boring if you are interested in flashy, single-note lead lines, and it is a different musical beast altogether, but once you appreciate the subtle fluence that Van Eps had with chords, you can appreciate how intricately beautiful this album is. His influence is probably strongest on players like Ted Greene, who may have had the most advanced understanding of chords of any jazz guitarist (he literally wrote the book on it-- it's called Chord Chemistry). Similarly, Lenny Breau not only played his own variation on a seven-string, he took his primary jazz influence from a piano player-- Bill Evans. Since, then, jazz guitarists have been adding more and more strings to their instruments, like Charlie Hunter (8 strings), Michael Coppola (9 strings), Egberto Gismonti (10 strings), Phil DeGruy (17 strings). Pat Metheny has even been known to play a 42-string monstrosity, although his playing on that instrument is rather divorced from traditional jazz. The roots of that tradition go back to George Van Eps, and this album is the best way to become acquainted with him since it presents him in a solo context. He has also recorded with bands, and some collaborations with Howard Alden, but this is the way to hear him-- without distractions.

Further listening:

Lenny Breau & Dave Young, Live at Bourbon St. Lenny Breau is my favorite jazz guitarist of all time. He mastered a seven string guitar, fretting chords with his index and ring fingers while fretting lead lines with his middle finger and pinky, all with intricate fingerpicking. Then, there are those artificial harmonics... Lenny Breau is indescribable, and this one was his best.

Joe Pass, Virtuoso. This one goes without saying.

Ted Greene, Solo Guitar. Greene comes closest to Van Eps' sound.

Martin Taylor, In Concert. A modern master of solo jazz guitar, also with roots in swing (he used to play with Grappelli).

Phil DeGruy, Innuendo Out The Other. Solo jazz guitarp (yes, that is spelled correctly) with a sense of humor.

Jimmy Bruno, Solo. A hard bop specialist steps into Joe Pass territory.

Description of Soliloquy

As his third album for Capitol, 1968's Soliloquy was the pure essence of Eps, Just George and his 7-string guitar. With an approach to solo guitar unlike that of any of his predecessors or contemporaries, George's performances were legendary, and Soliloquy eloquently underscores his mastery. Sundazed 2002.
