Music Review: "...Love's In Need Of Love Today..."

George Michael fans have waited the guts of 2 decades to see his catalogue get a decent re-launch and remaster - well I think they may well have to wait a little longer, because in my opinion there is something dreadfully wrong with this remaster...there really is. But let's get to the details first...
Released Monday 31 January 2011 in the UK (1 February in the USA), Epic 88697753192 breaks down as follows:
Disc 1 gives us his iconic debut album "Faith" (1987 on Epic Records) in remastered form (51:36 minutes), while Disc 2 offers up nine B-sides, Non-Album Tracks and Extended Remixes associated with the record both in 1987 and the years beyond (54:16 minutes).
The problem for me is with the MATT COLTON remaster of the album - it's awful. Most 80's albums don't transfer well to CD anyway - they've always been difficult because the awful gimmickry in the studio is even more amplified - the thinny drum machines - the dated Brass bits done on a synthesizer - the staggering amount of compression baring down on the tapes to rid them completely of hiss. That's what you get here. Imagine each of the vocals either treated or buried in the back of the mix with the rest of the instrumentation sounding dampened to death - rather like a really oppressive Trevor Horn production. You have to crank Disc 1 to huge levels to get any punch out of it - and when you do - it still sounds dead and muzzled - and wrong. If I were to try to describe the sound here in one word it would be "disorientated". You don't feel you're listening to a cohesive whole, just someone's idea of what was contemporary sounding production at the time. I guess it was the decade that was in it - the Eighties - and this is before we even talk about how badly dated some of the material is - 20 million copies or no. Of course there's great songs on "Faith" - "Father Figure", "Hand To Mouth", "One More Try" and "Kissing A Fool" - and they all still stand up - but the sound quality doesn't.
Disc 2 seems to have been handled by someone else because the sound is much better - even if the dreaded extended 12" mixes are playing - it is very clear. "Fantasy" is a great B-side and the two Stevie Wonder covers "I Believe When I Fall In Love" and "Love's In Need Of Love Today (Live)" (lyrics above) have always suited his voice and were sung with genuine passion and admiration. But it ends in 3 pointless and irritating remixes of "Monkey".
The booklet is a barely functionary 16-page affair with lyrics, a few photo collages and a brief history of the album and its 6 singles (4 number ones in the USA alone). But little of it gets you away from the awful feeling that is a pretty piss-poor presentation - what they could get away with. Combine this with a dull Disc 1 and there's little to get excited about - and little to recommend.
I doubt I'm going to be playing this dreadfully dated production ever again. George went on of course to real songwriting genius on his next album - the infinitely better "Listen Without Prejudice"... But for fans who've waited years for this, I feel disappointment will be mostly what they feel...especially if they splash out on the more expensive issues.
George Michael is a world-class artist and deserved better than this. What a let down.
