Music Review: Great Singing, Dare I Question The Music ?

I picked this up on a whim, and for singing, I wasn't in the least disappointed.
Fleming's voice is gorgeous and despite one or two phrases here and there that don't seem to lie well for her, she is a first rate interpreter.
I wish that I felt as strongly about the music.
It used to be said that American operas were essentially Broadway musicals that had recitatives instead of spoken dialog. For me, this disc proves it. With the single exception of the arrival scene from Barber's VANESSA which has some harmonic grit, and Stravinsky's clever take on the recit-aria-recit-cabaletta structure of bel canto from THE RAKE'S PROGRESS, the rest pretty much seem to be show tunes tricked up to operatic proportions. Where are grittier American works such as Sessions' MONTEZUMA, Schuller's THE VISITATION, Talma's THE ALCESTIAD, or Bernstein's A QUIET PLACE ? Surely, one of those should have been represented. Most of the music here is simply bland !
The MET Orchestra under Levine is superb, as are the New York Voices choral group.
The sound recording is first rate.

Like Dawn Upshaw's The World So Wide on Nonesuch, this program is such an inviting cross section of American opera of the last 50 years, you wonder why more of it hasn't been recorded. Composers include Carlisle Floyd, Douglas Moore, Samuel Barber, and Gian Carlo Menotti, whose childlike "Monica's Waltz" from the otherwise lurid opera The Medium is a highlight. Old favorites are here, such as Gershwin's "Summertime." And new favorites, too: Andre Previn's forthcoming "A Streetcar Named Desire" graciously offers Straussian lushness and bitonal wind-instrument details suggesting Blanche DuBois's mind departing from reality, all sounding remarkably true to Previn's pre-World War II upbringing in Berlin. This dramatically alert arioso isn't so melodically memorable but makes all necessary dramatic points eloquently. Though she performs vividly throughout, Fleming often lets her vocal tone overwhelm articulation of the words--a middling drawback. And comedy is not her thing: Bernstein's "Glitter and Be Gay" is way too hammy. --David Patrick Stearns
