Music Review: What a Performance!

This recording derives from a live performance on June 24, 1959. The cast list is impressive:

Rodelinda - Joan Sutherland
Eduige - Janet Baker
Garibaldo - Raymond Herincx
Bertarido - Margreta Elkins
Grimoaldo - Alfred Hallett
Unulfo - Patricia Kern

All of these singers are at sweet spots in their careers as far as Handel goes. Sutherland's light, silver tones at this stage in her career are perfect for Handel opera. Her acting is excellent as well. Janet Baker flames forth as Eduige gloriously. She upstages even the excellent Margreta Elkins, who sings Rodelinda's husband.

The men are also very good - something that wasn't always the case in the baroque and bel canto revivals of the 50s and 60s (Semiramide comes to mind). Raymond Herincx, who would sing opposite Janet Baker in her famed "Dido and Aeneas," has excellent range. His virile voice is also surprisingly agile. The tenor Alfred Hallett was the only singer with whom I was not acquainted with prior to hearing this recording. He does very well, however, as a typical English tenor. Some of his top notes sound a less than effortless, but are still enjoyable.

And then there's the sound.

If the performance weren't so divine, this recording would deserve about 3 stars. The live 1959 sound is not flattering to the orchestra on account of some unsteady pitches. This has little effect on the voices, however, so that 95% of the opera is quite tolerable.

If you're an audiophile, I would stay away from this recording. Otherwise, if you're able to tolerate less than amazing monaural sound, this is a spectacular performance. For example, in the second verse of the final chorus, Sutherland takes off with some of the most delightful embellishment I've heard. A joyful ending to an excellent operatic experience.
